Substitute Custodian, Morning Shift

Sub Custodians provide essential support by filling in for full-time custodial staff who are absent due to illness, vacation, or other time off. This on‑call position offers flexible hours — up to 28 hours per week — based on availability and assignment acceptance. Sub Custodians are the first to be notified when full‑time positions open, making this a great entry point for those seeking permanent roles.

Shifts vary by building, with morning shifts typically running from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and evening shifts from around 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. until 10:30 or 11:00 p.m.

TYPE OF POSITION:
Hourly, as needed A‑shift. Hours may vary based on program needs.

REPORTS TO:

Director of Building and Grounds, Building Engineers, Building Principals.

SUPERVISION:
None.

SALARY: $16.25/hr.

QUALIFICATIONS:



Required:

High school diploma or equivalent.

• Preferred:
Similar job‑related experience, Bilingual.

Position Summary

The Custodian is a contact point for students, teachers, support staff, colleagues, and parents. The Custodian is responsible for the day‑to‑day operation of the building, including cleaning, maintaining grounds, community education activities, special events, security, safety, and other functions as assigned.

Essential Duties
  • Direct Service
    • Perform cleaning tasks as assigned (sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, waxing floors; cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms; washing chairs, desks and chalkboards; emptying trash cans; cleaning and sanitizing all areas of the locker rooms).
    • Work with teachers and other staff in moving furniture and delivering supplies.
    • Maintain grounds by cutting and trimming the lawn, shoveling and blowing snow from walkways.
    • Clean and maintain cafeteria and equipment.
    • Maintain building security.
    • Clean up body fluids and secretions in all areas of the school.
  • Customer Support
    • Assist building administrators and staff in setting up for special events and other special tasks as assigned.
    • Collaborate with teachers and support personnel for the purpose of assisting in the mission of the school district.
    • Communicate effectively with students, teachers, support staff, colleagues, and parents.
    • Demonstrate respect for the basic dignity of students, teachers, support staff, colleagues, and parents.
    • Work cooperatively with students, teachers, support staff, colleagues, and parents.
  • Administrative Support
    • Perform record‑keeping as assigned.
    • Monitor supplies and notify lead custodian when supplies are needed.
    • Coordinate with community education and other groups.
    • Adhere to federal, state, and District data privacy regarding employee information.
    • Other duties as assigned.
Working Environment & Physical Demands

The methods of performing the essential job functions require the following physical demands: continuous standing and walking; frequent stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling, sitting, walking, hearing, talking, and seeing; frequent lifting and/or moving of equipment, supplies, and furniture; occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds; frequent pushing and pulling; work with various chemicals and follow Material Safety Data Sheet; work with personal protective equipment in dealing with body fluids;

work outside during inclement weather.
