Material Handler I – Warehouse Department

Reports to:

Production Supervisor FLSA Status:
Non‑exempt Pay Band: 5 Wage Range: $22 – $25

Shifts:

12‑HR Day (6:00 AM – 6:00 PM)

Job Summary

A Material Handler I is responsible for creating accurate shipping documentation and providing leadership for production‑related issues in the warehouse. This position unloads, transports, stores, records, retrieves, and loads all materials throughout the plant in an accurate and efficient manner while assisting with shipping and recycling responsibilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operate all warehouse equipment including balers, lift trucks, walkie‑riders, battery chargers, forklift, and shrink wrappers safely and efficiently.
  • Receive and load raw materials, finished goods, work‑in‑process, and mail according to established processes.
  • Transport, store, record, and retrieve all materials accurately.
  • Maintain complete knowledge of the Parts Inventory System.
  • Read and understand job tickets, manifests, and production schedules.
  • Collect shredded, banded, and load paper materials, cardboard, and other recyclable materials.
  • Communicate with machine operators regarding all work‑in‑progress and finished goods inventory needed.
  • Train warehouse personnel as needed and provide clear directions to Material Handler II employees to assist the department manager in ensuring crew workloads are met.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized area/department.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) tasks to maintain optimal equipment performance.
  • Ensure compliance with Nahan Lean manufacturing principles.
  • Follow all Nahan quality and safety policies and procedures.
  • Work assigned shifts, including weekends and overtime, as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Skills & Abilities Required
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot basic machine malfunctions.
  • Attention to detail and ability to identify quality defects.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders and technical specifications.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, as well as train and coach.
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, and listening).
  • Excellent time‑management skills and organizational skills.
  • Proficient/fluent in the English language, both written and verbal.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Forklift experience preferred. Must be willing to be forklift certified and trained upon hire.
  • Two years of previous related experience in warehouse and inventory control preferred.
  • On‑the‑job training provided.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This position operates in a manufacturing environment with normal to moderate working conditions, moderate to loud noise levels, and the routine use of printing equipment and machines. The employee may need to stand for long periods, use hands or fingers to reach or handle materials, and may need to lift 70 lbs or more at a time. All vision abilities are required for close‑up work.

Employees must tolerate and endure extended seasonal hours and remain alert to meet deadlines. Exposure to machinery, moving parts, airborne particles such as paper dust, hazardous materials, fumes, adverse weather, high precarious places, confined spaces, and hearing protection may be required.
