    Work Hours:

    Day Shift for the initial 6‑week training academy, then a shift will be assigned.
  • Days of Work: Monday‑Friday for the initial 6‑week training academy, then schedule will be assigned based on facility needs.
  • Travel Required: Yes, during the initial 6‑week academy. All centralized training will be held at the DOC Central Office starting the week after hire, with one day at MCF‑St. Cloud at the conclusion of the academy. No hotel accommodations offered for St. Cloud hires during training.
  • Salary Range: $29.61 per hour; $61,826 annually.
  • Classified Status: Non‑Status during the initial 6‑week training academy; classified after appointment to Corrections Officer 1.

Position Overview

The Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking individuals to train as corrections officers and maintain safety, security, and order at Minnesota Correctional Facilities. No corrections experience is required; training will be provided.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safety, security, and control of the correctional facility.
  • Supervise incarcerated persons, encouraging positive behavior and preparing them for successful community reintegration.
  • Communicate written and verbal information clearly, accurately, and timely to support decisions and actions.
  • Operate all equipment competently and ensure efficient, safe use.
  • Prepare for and respond to emergencies using Incident Command System (ICS) procedures, safeguarding the public, staff, and inmates.
  • Adhere to all agency and state policies, statutes, and the DOC vision, mission, values, and initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Age: 18 years or older for adult facilities; 21 years or older for juvenile facilities.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Pass a criminal history background check, including completion of all sentencing and restitution requirements.
  • Be able to acquire and possess a firearm; a permit may be required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • At least one of the following:
    • One or more years of full‑time work experience in any field.
    • Two or more years of part‑time (≥20 hrs/wk) work experience in any field.
    • Associate degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, or related fields.
    • Bachelor’s degree in any accredited field.
    • Honorable discharge or current membership in good standing in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
    • Completion of a Minnesota Correctional Facility internship in a related security area.
