As a Field Service Technician
, you will assist with on‑site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. You will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers and are expected to be proactive with the sales of TDS services and products. Services include telephony, video/CATV/DBS, internet, and high‑speed networks.
Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the individual selected for this position must reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Monticello, Minnesota warehouse located at 316 Pine Street, Monticello, MN 55362.
This position can be hired at either a Field Service Technician (requisition ‑29266), Field Service Technician‑Network (requisition ‑29267), or Field Service Technician‑Network Specialist (requisition ‑29268) level, depending on the skills and qualifications of the candidate.
Responsibilities- Assist with and perform on‑site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and/or other TDS products and services for new and existing customers.
- Identify location of defective cable using various test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs. Pole climbing and operating construction equipment is required.
- Locate, identify, and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage. Keep an orderly log of all locate requests in our exchange area.
- Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
- Provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections, responding to “trouble” dispatches.
- Support enhancement and maintenance of record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
- Deliver excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.
- Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs and customer obligations.
- Must successfully complete customer‑specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer.
- Be available for on‑call/standby responsibilities; may require occasional travel and overtime.
- Successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
- Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW >10,000 lbs.
- Hold A+ certification and have computer networking experience.
- Understand telecommunication products and services across multiple domains (inside wiring, internet, grounding, data, fiber, video, inventory, etc.).
- Have practical knowledge of computer applications (databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Office).
- Work independently with little or no supervision.
- Demonstrate customer service, sales skills, and effective verbal and written communication.
- Show proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
- Operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
Perform duties that require sitting, standing, writing, operating a computer keyboard, and using standard office equipment and telephone. Regularly communicate with customers. Frequently move, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, or climb. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
