Responsibilities
- Installs, troubleshoots, tests, splices, repairs, and maintains telecommunications and network equipment, including telephone equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic and copper facilities, and other TDS products for new and existing customers.
- Installs, configures, maintains, and repairs PBX, Key Systems, Centrex Systems, business systems, fiber terminals, POTS, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, DS3s, carriers, paging, and wireless.
- Identifies location of defective cable using test equipment and repairs buried, aerial, and customer cable; locates and marks company underground and buried facilities.
- Performs pole climbing and operates construction equipment as required.
- Maintains log of locate requests and performs cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
- Installs, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and maintains central office equipment and auxiliary equipment, maintaining backups and providing functional support.
- Provides advanced troubleshooting support and responds to dispatches.
- Maintains record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements).
- Provides excellent customer service and proactively educates and sells TDS products and services.
- Performs project management for installation of systems and related tasks.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years technical telecommunications experience OR current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- At least 1 year of basic fiber optic or copper cable splicing and repair, installation, or switch training.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to follow TDS attendance guidelines.
Other Qualifications
- Must successfully complete customer‑specific requirements, including background check.
- Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel; willingness to work overtime.
- Completion of all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
- Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW of >10,000 lbs.
- Understanding of telecommunication products such as fiber optic transmission, structured wiring, PBX, Centrex, switch maintenance, and related systems.
- Proficiency with computer applications including MS Office, plant record systems, and trouble/repair/dispatch systems.
- Independent decision‑making ability with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated customer service and sales skills.
- Organizational and multitasking skills.
- Physical capacity to operate heavy construction machinery, dig, lift, and climb; ability to lift up to 100 lbs.
- Willingness to work various/swing shifts.
- Ability to drive vehicles with manual transmissions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
The role requires regular sitting, standing, writing, and computer use; frequent communication with customers; moving and reaching for items; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; lifting up to 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs; and operating heavy equipment in outdoor and indoor environments with possible extreme weather conditions.
