School Counselor / Social Worker at Valley Middle School - STEM. 1.0 FTE. Beginning of the 2026-27 school year. Final date to receive applications:

• Licensed by the State of Minnesota in both a school counselor and social worker preferred.
• Strong general academic background.
• Knowledge of the skills and attitudes students need to achieve academic success, college and career readiness and social/emotional development.
• Ability to relate positively to students, staff and community.
• Demonstrated experience and proficiency working with a culturally, ethnically, racially and socioeconomically diverse school community is preferred.

• School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals licensed in Minnesota. They link home, school and community to promote and support students' academic, social, emotional and personal success by providing specialized services.
• Services to students, families and schools: use assessment tools to identify and eliminate barriers to student success; collaborate with school staff, families, community agencies and other professionals; provide services and ongoing emotional and behavioral support to individuals, small groups and classrooms; provide crisis prevention and intervention; communicate factors affecting student performance; develop and implement plans to enhance student success; support students/families facing challenges with resources;
  
  address mental and emotional health; monitor attendance; identify and report abuse and neglect; advocate for students, families and staff; perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

• State Certification, Legal Regulations and Professional Credentials:
  Minnesota Board of Social Work licensure levels (LICSW, LISW, LGSW, LSW) and School Social Work license through the Minnesota Department of Education.
• School Social Workers adhere to the National Association of Social Workers code of ethics.

• Provide individual and group counseling for students and academic counseling.
• Assist the student services administration in dealing with student/teacher challenges.
• Initiate referrals in child study/special programs and serve as a resource person in teams of school personnel.
• Apply developmental, learning, counseling and education theories; understand educational systems, legal issues, policies, research and trends in education.
• Demonstrate leadership through a comprehensive school counseling program; apply legal and ethical principles; apply ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors for Student Success standards.
• Make referrals to appropriate school and community resources; consult to support student achievement and success.
• Collaborate with families, teachers, administrators and other school staff for student achievement; assess and report program results to the school community.

Building Principal

According to contractual agreement. If benefit eligible, benefits are available to new employees effective the first day of active employment.
