Position: 2nd Shift Maintenance Service Leader/ Technician Mentor

Summary

The Maintenance Service Leader / Technician Mentor is a hybrid role of both leadership and mentorship. Daily duties will be split working on the shop floor mentoring Technicians with a hands‑on approach as well as overseeing and coordinating daily maintenance and repair operations. The Maintenance Service Leader/Technician Mentor will schedule, and monitor shop employees, order, and organize parts and supplies, and provide a safe and efficient work environment and quality work to all customers.

This position coordinates activities with all shop personnel, outside vendors, ATS operations, drivers, and contractors.

Education and Experience
  • 1-3 years of equivalent experience in a related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, and trailer repair, etc., and/or a two‑year AAS Degree in a medium/heavy truck diesel program and/or maintenance‑related program.
  • 1 to 3 years of supervisory experience in a maintenance shop environment is preferred.
  • Experience using maintenance software such as Meritor Toolbox, Bendix, and Haldex is preferred.
  • Must have a solid understanding of parts and inventory control usually gained through 1‑2 years of training and/or related experience.
  • Must be able to read; be familiar with, and able to reference the current DOT Out of Service regulations.
  • Must possess a high level of stress tolerance and the ability to multi‑task.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizing, and prioritization skills.
  • DOT and forklift certification preferred or ability to become forklift certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Must have the ability to operate vehicles; a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Must be able to operate related power/shop equipment.
  • Collaborative approach with a proven ability to develop strong trusting relationships to gain support and achieve results.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, listening, and verbal).
  • Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate all activities associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of assigned equipment/vehicles by effectively scheduling work and leadership of technicians to ensure job tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Monitor work-in-progress job tasks, ensuring completed work meets required company and DOT maintenance standards.
  • Serve as the liaison between technicians and drivers, providing a high level of customer service while enhancing the driver’s experience.
  • Verify all required parts for the repair have been added to the work orders for correct billing.
  • Ensure all company‑specific and DOT‑regulated safety procedures are implemented and followed.
  • Ensure all preventative maintenance and maintenance service items are completed and all job tasks have been completed/updated or removed from the system prior to the equipment leaving the shop.
  • Communicate with drivers and/or Operations staff regarding the status of vehicle/equipment maintenance and repair jobs and ensure volume of work produced meets the company’s needs.
  • Issue necessary parts requested by mechanics and track in an inventory system.
  • Mentor the technicians with a hands‑on approach, on the shop floor, overseeing their quality of work and guiding them on the repairs.
  • Train technicians on all appropriate safety practices and policies.
  • Provide direct hands‑on assistance during difficult‑to‑diagnose complaints while following OEM and ATS warrantable and/or non‑warrantable standard repair guidelines and SOP’s.
  • Conduct quality assurance inspection audits to insure all preventive maintenance, repair guidelines, and SOPs are being followed.
  • Train on DOT inspections and ensure the trainees are competent in the inspection and repair process.
  • Assist in meetings and provide feedback as needed on the progress of the trainees and where they need more support/training.
  • Partner with the Shop Manager and Human Resources in the recruiting, interviewing, selection, onboarding, and training of new employees.
