Position: Fixed Route Bus Operator - Full Time

Job Summary

The Fixed Route Bus Operator is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and friendly fixed‑route and commuter bus transportation services. This is a full‑time Union position with at least two consecutive days off per week. Work schedules (bids) are selected based on seniority.

Starting hourly wage: $25.51. This job will be posted until filled, with preference given to applicants who apply by Tuesday, May 12 at 4:30 pm.

Essential Functions of the Position
  • Provide safe, reliable, and friendly fixed‑route and commuter bus transportation services
  • Perform complete pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, equipment safety checks, and report mechanical or operational issues
  • Operate a transit bus in moderate to heavy traffic, following time schedules and traffic regulations to ensure passenger safety and a smooth ride
  • Operate rim and wheelchair lift, assisting disabled passengers with boarding, securing mobility devices, and exiting safely
  • Collect fares, make passenger stops at approved locations, maintain order on the bus, and report delays or service interruptions
  • Write reports and complete paperwork per policy concerning accidents, incidents, breakdowns, and mechanical defects
  • Stock route schedules on buses
  • Communicate courteously and professionally, maintaining respectful working relationships with coworkers and customers
  • Interact with coworkers, passengers, and the public in a manner that promotes a positive public image
  • Provide clear and detailed route and schedule information in response to passenger questions
  • Perform all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and maintain an ongoing awareness of safety practices
  • Follow safety rules and guidelines, wearing proper protective equipment when required, and using correct body mechanics and ergonomics
  • Address potentially unsafe conditions and report them to the responsible supervisor or safety representative
  • Perform other duties and activities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, three (3) years of satisfactory driving record, and background in transportation, customer service, or commercial vehicle operation. Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License with passenger and air‑brake endorsements and a current DOT medical certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Safely drive a transit vehicle in all traffic and weather conditions
  • Pass mandatory DOT physical certification and mandatory pre‑employment drug and alcohol testing
  • Deal with co‑workers, passengers, and the general public tactfully and courteously
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions; complete written reports
  • Read and speak English clearly; bilingual is a plus
  • Work flexible schedules, including late evenings, early mornings, and weekends
  • Maintain a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License with mandatory endorsements and a current DOT medical certificate
  • Know general geographic details of the St. Cloud Metropolitan area, including the Northstar Highway 10 corridor and downtown Minneapolis
  • Exchange information and maintain effective relationships with all levels of employees, committees, and groups; diffuse situations that exceed normal limits
Desirable Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary education, two (2) years at community college or business college
  • Experience in public transportation
  • Experience working with individuals having varying physical and cognitive abilities
Physical Demands and Working Environment
  • Extended periods of sitting while driving fixed‑route and commuter bus coaches; limited standing and walking
  • Moderate exposure to temperature extremes, minimal exposure to noise, physical and/or chemical hazards
  • Use of personal computer, onboard fare collection and communications technology, and two‑way radio equipment on a regular basis
