Body Shop Technician responsibilities include fabricating, welding, integrating electrical systems and lighting, installing hydraulic systems and components as related to the upfitting, modification, maintenance and repair of truck equipment on various commercial truck chassis.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES(This is a list of essential job duties but is not intended to be exhaustive. Other duties may be added or removed at management discretion. - Properly install and repair truck equipment, utilizing information from component manufacturers, company build documents, customer requirements, and industry standard practices
- Install all types of truck bodies and related equipment including dump, van, platform, refuse, roll-off, service, etc. onto various makes and models of truck chassis
- Integrate electrical components including lighting, controls, safety equipment, operator indicators, etc. into chassis electrical systems
- Properly utilizing body interface connections
- Build and document wiring harnesses, route and secure according to industry standards
- Assemble and install hydraulic system components including reservoirs, pumps, valves, controls, etc.; determine optimal location for installation on vehicle chassis
- Manufacture and install hydraulic hoses, document for future use, route and secure according to industry standards
- Install transmission and engine power takeoff equipment
- Modify OEM chassis by relocating components including air tanks, batteries, axles, suspension, etc. as needed for proper equipment installation
- Install snow plow hitches, snow plows, and various styles of ice control spreaders
- Install liftgates including rail, arm, and tuck under styles onto a variety of truck bodies
- Install towing connections including rear hitch plates, pintle hooks, fifth wheels, etc.
- Fabricate, modify, and assemble carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components into final products through cutting, grinding, welding, etc. using hand tools, shop machines, gas torch, or hand plasma and welding equipment
- Develop templates, fixtures, and other work aids to promote accuracy and efficiency
- Operate lifting devices and equipment to position items
- Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair similar equipment
Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS / TRAINING / EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS- High School Diploma, 2-year Technical School preferred. Equivalent amount of work experience may be considered in lieu of schooling.
- Unrestricted Driver’s License – Technician must be able to safely drive vehicles around the location property as well as pull vehicles into the shop bays.
- CDL A or B License beneficial, assistance will be given to obtain if willing. (Some locations may require a CDL)
- Perform heavy duty truck/trailer repair and maintenance.
- Obtain and maintain 100% Certified Technician Status with Navistar/International, Cummins and other OEM’s as required.
- Operate power and hand tools and other equipment used in servicing vehicles.
- Move freely throughout the service area, including continuous physical effort; climbing in/out of truck cabs, underneath trucks, bending, walking, manipulating tools/equipment, etc.
- Written (for documenting work) and verbal communication skills.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with co-workers and customers.
- Read and interpret work orders, service information and wiring diagrams.
