Sessional Lecturer – LHA
1818H – Politics of Higher Education

Course Description
This course examines the field of higher education through a political lens and covers relations between higher education institutions and states, between institutions, and within institutions. The aim is to introduce students to the fundamental assumptions and applications of political theories as they relate to international, national, organizational, and individual levels of analysis. Topics covered during this course include political theory, political dynamics, sources of power, and political behaviour.

These are in turn used to analyze current debates and events in higher education such as higher education as a public or a private good, academic freedom, accountability, internal governance, leadership and administration, and labour relations.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctorate in Higher Education or a related field; have a demonstrated record of scholarship in the field of Higher Education and the subject area of the course; have practical experience related to the topic of the course; and have successful graduate teaching experience in the subject area of the course and a successful track record of teaching online, preferably using Canvas/Quercus.

  • Prepare, organize, and lead this graduate half course.
  • Be available to students seeking assistance between classes.
  • Evaluate student work and provide students with feedback.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
It is understood that some announcements of vacancies are tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolment. Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note:

Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
