All employees are expected to maintain a permanent residence within the State of Utah as a condition of employment. New employees must provide a valid Utah residential address within 30 days of their start date.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision, the successful candidates will prepare and teach Sociology courses assigned by the department.

Position Notes

This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available. The position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit. Adjunct positions are offered on a semester-by-semester basis with no guarantee of continued employment. Official transcripts are required for those who are offered employment within 30 days of hire.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prepares and teaches Sociology courses as stipulated by department instructions and in course syllabi provided by the department.
  • Provides meaningful and effective instruction in all assigned courses.
  • Develops course calendars and weekly outlines in consultation with the department.
  • Uses Canvas according to SLCC and department policies.
  • Submits a complete syllabus by due dates provided by the department or SLCC.
  • Supports professional commitment to the Department, School and College mission and values.
  • Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
  • Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Provides appropriate and timely feedback and grades for all assignments.
  • Returns graded assignments/quizzes in an appropriate time frame.
  • Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and detailed grade calculation records.
  • Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.
  • Informs students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits final grades by published deadlines.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
  • Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
  • Maintains professional and collegial behavior.
  • Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 days).
  • Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
  • Completes all required employee trainings.
  • Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines.
  • Provides ADA accommodations to students as directed by SLCC’s ADA professionals.
  • Other job‑related duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the field being taught and ability to communicate assigned subject matter to students.
  • Ability to use a computer and other instructional technologies.
  • Ability to maintain respectful and ethical working relationships with students and across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Sociology, or closely related field, from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Sociology
  • Experience teaching at the college level
  • Experience with Canvas LMS
  • Research experience
Employment Conditions

You are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/Instructor on a contract‑to‑contract basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment. Your employment may be terminated at will at any time. You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

Additional Requirements

All Faculty will maintain an on‑site campus presence to encourage in‑person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for online‑only courses.

This position is subject to a successful completion of a criminal background check.
