112H1 S – Engineering Strategies and Practice II
Course description: This course introduces and provides a framework for the design process. Students are introduced to communication as an integral component of engineering practice. The course is a vehicle for understanding problem solving and developing communications skills. Building on the first course, this second in the two Engineering Strategies and Practice course sequence introduces students to project management and to the design process in greater depth.
Students work in teams on a term‑length design project and will write a series of technical reports and give a team‑based design project presentation.

Number of positions: Up to fourteen (17) positions
Estimated TA support: TAs coordinate tutorial and mark design documents. CIs and TAs coordinate closely.
Estimated course enrollment: 900–1,100 students, in tutorial sections of up to 36 students each.
Class schedule: Students attend 2 one‑hour lectures and 1 two‑hour tutorial per week.
Sessional dates: January 1 2027 – April 30 2027
Hours: Up to 140 hours
Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for Writing Instructor 1–2 (including long‑term and priority) with vacation and overtime pay as per the Collective Agreement. Rates stated in the Collective Agreement prevail if they differ.
Minimum QualificationsA master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., Communication, English, English for Specific Purposes, Applied Linguistics, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) and strong written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and ability to work as part of a team.
Preferred QualificationsA PhD in an appropriate discipline, TESL or CELTA certificate (or equivalent), familiarity with engineering communication practices, and experience as an instructor or communication specialist in a technical field. Experience in curriculum development, tutoring, or working with a diverse group of students; extensive teamwork, team teaching, and teamwork instruction are assets.
Description of Duties- Attend up to five (5) 1.5‑hour team meetings throughout the term for logistical planning, benchmarking, and best‑practice review in teaching online.
- Attend up to ten (10) whole‑teaching team meetings (Mondays 9–10 AM).
- Coordinate with two assigned TAs to support approximately 70 students and 10–12 student teams with pre‑ and post‑assignment assistance and debriefs.
- Visit ten or more tutorials for student support and to facilitate select in‑tutorial activities.
- Visit four or more work sessions and active lectures before major deadlines.
- Grade 60–70 of each of two individual assignments and 10–12 team charter assignments (January).
- Deliver all teaching and lectures in person; some opportunities for online support are possible but no online‑only duties.
- Mark, communicate with students and team colleagues via email and MS Teams, and prepare materials, mostly online yet requiring in‑person presence at scheduled times.
- Collaborate with the Communication Coordinator on student support strategies, including Professional Language Development needs.
- Deliver tutoring practice presentations in April.
- Grade final presentations, one full day in April during the exam period.
- Participate in a 15‑minute check‑in regarding workload and processes in February or March.
- Submit Unit 3 application form.
