282H1 F - Engineering Communication I

Course description: This course develops students’ communications skills focusing on the specific skills required for work in foundational civil engineering. Target communication areas include:
Oral Presentation;
Logical Argument;
Document Development;
Sentence and Discourse Control; and Visual Design. The course will build capacity in support of specific assignments delivered in other courses in the same term. This is a .2 weighted course.

Estimated course enrolment: 150 students, in sections of approximately 30 students each.

Hours: 60% HCE (up to a maximum of 138 hrs)

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are:
Sessional Lecturer 1 - $9,997.47;
Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term - $10,699.22;
Sessional Lecturer 2 - $10,699.22;
Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term - $10,953.96;
Sessional Lecturer 3 - $10,953.96 and Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term - $11,212.15. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.

include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.

include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level, and familiarity with engineering communication practices, and experience as an instructor in first year foundation course, Engineering Strategies and Practice. Experience in Civil Engineering education or practice is also highly desirable.

• attending one 1-hour lecture per week
• leading one 1-hour tutorial per week
• attending weekly course planning meetings with teaching team, and benchmarking meetings where necessary
• grading up to four non-closely supervised written assignments (two outlines and two reports) and one final team oral presentation
• grading up to 25 non-CIV student reports for a partner course, CIV

• collaborating with colleagues in partner courses
• consulting with students (individually and in groups) to help them develop as writers and presenters
• must have the ability to adapt to different communication instruction activities and move online if required
