    Description:

    The central objective of this course is to equip students with the tools necessary to tackle issues that involve the empirical analysis of public policy problems of the sort they might encounter in a professional environment. The course will cover probability theory and statistics, with a focus on the sensible application of methods to deal with empirical problems using appropriate data.

    The course is designed with twin objectives in mind. The first is to provide students with the ability to analyze critically the empirical analysis done by others at a level sufficient to make intelligent decisions about how to use that analysis in the design of public policy. The second is to provide students with the skills necessary to perform empirical policy analysis on their own or to participate on a team involved in such an empirical analysis.
  • Estimated course enrollment: 120 students
  • Class schedule: Mondays 2-5pm
  • Delivery method: In-person (may change according to faculty or department circumstances)

Sessional dates of appointment:
September 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026. This position includes the completion of any coursework and marking not finished by Dec. 31, 2026.

Salary

Sessional Lecturer Assistant – $55.25/hour (plus 4% vacation pay). Rates stated in the collective agreement prevail if different.

Qualifications
  • Graduate degree (MA preferred) in Public Policy, with specialization in quantitative and economic policy
  • Extensive professional policy practitioner experience required
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level required
Responsibilities
  • Teaching Assistant at the graduate level, developing the syllabus and key deliverable pieces with support from the instructor
  • Leading Unit 1 TAs
  • Providing weekly office hours for academic counselling of students
  • Preparing and delivering course material with support from the course instructor
  • Preparing and delivering assignments and tests with support from the course instructor
  • Marking student work and submitting grades
