Environmental Impact Assessment

Course Description

Environmental impact assessment (EIA) has emerged as a key component of environmental planning and management. EIAs are planning tools used to predict and assess the potential costs and benefits of proposed projects, policies, and plans, and to avoid or mitigate their adverse impacts. This course focuses on the origins, principles, scope, and purpose of EIA from both theoretical and practical perspectives, with an emphasis on the Canadian context.

Students will examine the various components of environmental impact assessments and critically evaluate techniques used to assess, predict, and mitigate environmental and social impacts. Through course readings, in‑class activities, assignments, and case studies, students will engage with critiques of EIA, particularly as they relate to climate change, sustainability, long‑term monitoring, meaningful public engagement, Indigenous Peoples' rights, dispossession and resettlement, and environmental justice.

Case studies will provide students with an understanding of current EIA practice and develop their ability to critically examine and improve environmental assessment processes.
