Description

A broad introduction to Islam, including the history, culture, and religion of the people and places that came to be influenced by Islam and that constitute a world civilization. The course explores the questions of what makes something Islamic, how Islamic identity has evolved, and the role of Islamic institutions in shaping societies. Key themes cover the rise and spread of Islam, the Qur’an and Arabic, political thought, law and society, and literary and artistic expressions.

Attention is paid to the geographical and ethno‑linguistic scope of the Muslim world and the diversity of peoples and traditions that make up Islamic civilizations.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations or related field, or equivalent knowledge and experience. Evidence of knowledge in the subject matter.

Description of Duties

Preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; holding regular office hours; calculation and submission of grades; and other teaching‑related duties and administrative tasks associated with an undergraduate course.
