Position Summary
Under the direction of the City of St. George Dispatch Shift Supervisor, the Emergency Medical Dispatcher uses radio, telephone, and computer systems to dispatch police, fire, medical, and other services to requesting agencies and the public; provides emergency medical information in response to medical emergencies; handles sensitive and confidential information; and provides information to the public on city ordinances and state and federal laws.
EssentialFunctions
- Receives all non‑emergency and emergency 911 calls from all areas within Washington County.
- Prioritizes emergency telephone calls based on severity and elicits information from callers in high‑stress situations, calming and reassuring them to determine the nature of the situation.
- Provides correct lifesaving instructions to callers until emergency medical personnel arrive.
- Dispatches appropriate agency by radio, telephone, or pages; communicates with field officers and handles requests for registration, license, criminal history, etc.
- Receives initial complaints from citizens, determines if an activity is in progress, and maintains communication to provide updates.
- Tracks officer activity in real time using the Computer‑Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and monitors activities to provide safety and assistance.
- Enters, updates, maintains, and retrieves information in the Motorola Flex records management system.
- Manages NCIC computer system to receive and dispense information on impounds, repossessions, stolen, and recovered vehicles.
- Responds to citizen requests for information or refers appropriate department or agency.
- Handles initial information requests from the news media and references the proper department personnel.
- Communicates effectively on radio and telephone while entering data into the computer system.
- Monitors radio for various public safety agencies and receives business, medical, and fire alarms, dispatching accordingly.
- Maintains and updates instruction books and manuals.
- May train, mentor, and evaluate new Emergency Medical Dispatchers under the direction of the Dispatch Center Manager or Training Supervisor.
- Operates standard office equipment (photocopier, fax, etc.).
- Maintains good working relations with the public and other public safety agencies.
- Responds to other agencies and organizations soliciting information.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Maintains confidentiality.
Emergency Medical Dispatcher Level I:
- Assists with some aspects of dispatch training, including console training and mentoring new dispatchers.
- Acts with tact and impartiality at all times.
- Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Types forty (40) words per minute (net).
- Exhibits initiative and problem‑solving capability in a variety of law enforcement and medical situations.
- Makes decisions requiring immediate action.
- Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Reads and writes in English at a business level.
- Exhibits good judgment and self‑control during periods of extreme stress.
- Maintains scores of 80% or higher on all National Academy of Medical Dispatcher quality assurance checks.
- Maintains a rating of proficient or higher on annual department evaluation.
- Shows efficiency in advanced Spillman records management and searching.
Emergency Medical Dispatcher Level II:
- All Level I essential functions.
- Trains recruits during console training and provides immediate assistance.
Emergency Medical Dispatcher Level III:
- All Level I and II essential functions.
- Acts as dispatcher in charge in the absence of a shift supervisor.
- Manages in‑progress calls and instructs other dispatchers during serious or unusual incidents.
- Notifies administration of any critical or unusual incident during the shift.
Salary: Starting salary is determined by experience and qualifications. Ranges as of December 2025 are as follows:
- Emergency Medical Dispatcher I – $48,320 – $72,480 per year.
- Emergency Medical Dispatcher II – $50,766 – $76,148 per year.
- Emergency Medical Dispatcher III – $56,036 – $84,054 per year.
