Job SummaryPerforms biological experiments, research and analysis. Solves a range of problems; analyzes possible solutions and makes recommendations for process improvement. Extracts information from existing databases or literature and performs reviews.
Conducts research and testing on basic and applied principles of microbial, plant, human, and animal life, including: origin, anatomy, and function of biological systems in both simple and complex settings. Collects and studies biological data to focus on structure, function, behavior, and tailored application. Completes technical evaluations and/or assessments of biologics, biological mechanisms, or biological properties. May specialize in:
- Microbiology:
Investigates the growth, structure, development, physiology, and other characteristics of microscopic organisms, including at both the molecular and cellular level, as well as their ecology and function in mixed communities. - Genetics, Molecular/Cellular Biology:
Studies and modifies the genetic system of organisms, including singular and/or multi‑cellular organisms. Understands and engineers the function of an organism and humans at the genetic level, including the expression of genes into functioning RNAs and proteins and the response to intracellular and extracellular stimuli. - Biochemistry:
Studies biochemical reactions (e.g., enzymology) and the respective impact/effects. - Virology:
Study of viruses; could include, but not limited to, submicroscopic, parasitic particles of genetic material contained in a protein coat and virus‑like agents.
- Performs assignments of moderate complexity by compiling and evaluating.
- Plans test experiments, including determining test procedures, limits, and instrumentation.
- Analyzes test data and results to determine acceptability or application of test item/system or validity of test data.
- Interprets, compiles, and analyzes data collected and writes various technical reports.
- Troubleshoots the testing process when expected results are not obtained.
- Recommends and executes paths forward to resolve analysis problems.
- Completes assigned project work within schedule and budget constraints.
- Assists with proposal efforts as needed.
- Builds relationships with internal clients. Has limited contact with external clients.
- Contributes to IR&D studies. Develops moderately complex processes or testing methods to improve quality or efficiency.
- Supports business development efforts led by others.
- May oversee lower‑level staff in extracting and preparing data for analysis.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field with 2 years of experience or master's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a related field.
