Position: PARKS CREW LEADER - CONSTRUCTION

Leads technical projects within the Parks Division. Responsible for the new construction of City of St. George owned facilities and/or the demolition and reconstruction/renovation of existing facilities and structures.

  • Performs all functions of the Parks Maintenance Worker at a high level of proficiency.
  • Plans, organizes, and participates in crew work projects.
  • Assigns, schedules, and coordinates personnel, equipment, and tasks. Coordinates and reviews work of crews in the maintenance, repair, and minor construction of park facilities and related equipment. Provides input into employee performance.
  • Supervises and trains parks maintenance employees in proper and safe use of tools, machines, chemicals, and related equipment. Prepares reports relative to accident, incident, or injury.
  • Builds restrooms, pumps houses, and pavilions, including site preparation, plumbing, electrical, roofing, drywall, doors, and hardware.
  • Maintains, cleans, repairs, and paints pavilions, playgrounds, restrooms, picnic tables, barbeques, and other park features.
  • Installs and renovates irrigation systems, including installing pipe, electrical conduit, backflow devices and storm drains. Excavates for footings and pipeline trenches and test holes to specifications.
  • Performs major repairs to broken water lines or valves.
  • Operates single and dual transmission trucks (including 10-wheel dump trucks), backhoe, grader, forklift, trencher, lift truck, water truck, and other power equipment incidental to the job.
  • Installs new playgrounds including excavation and layout for footings per manufacturer’s specifications. Assembles and installs playground equipment to manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Builds forms for curbing, access ramps, catch basins, diversion walls, and bench pads. Pours and finishes concrete.
  • Designs, builds, and installs tables, display cases, cabinets, and various types of holders, pedestals, props, etc. Works with all types of large carpentry equipment and small hand tools.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and checks on power equipment used. Performs set up and take down of special events such as the St. George Marathon, Art Festival, and other City sponsored events.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

    Extensive field work with 90% of work performed outside. Moderate physical activity exerting up to 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. May have uncomfortable working positions such as stooping, crouching, and bending. Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease. Risk of bodily injury is moderate under normal conditions. May have disagreeable elements such as appearance of work place, poor ventilation, or uneven temperatures.

    Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. Some exposure to hazardous materials such as fumes, pesticides, cleaning agents, etc.; high levels of noise; and construction areas, trenches, and confined spaces. Exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

    Note: Requires working extended or irregular hours such as weekends, nights, and holidays. Crew Leaders may be rotated through the various Parks Maintenance specialty areas such as landscaping, cemetery, and forestry, etc.

    Education

    High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience

    Minimum of four (4) years full time paid experience in construction and general maintenance work.

    Licenses and/or Certifications
    • Possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
    • Flagger certification or Traffic Control Technician (certification requirement depends on job duties.)
