Heavy Equipment Operator, General Labor, Construction Labor / Trades
Under the general supervision of Streets Division Crew Supervisors, drives and operates a variety of mobile or stationary construction and maintenance equipment in support of streets maintenance programs for the City of St. George. This is skilled work in light and heavy equipment operation and requires minor routine maintenance of related equipment.

Very heavy physical activity exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. May have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather.
Exposure to constant to intermittent sounds of a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss; shaking objects or surfaces; and conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes, or the skin. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.
Persons in this classification may be required to work unconventional work hours or shifts during emergency situations. Must be available for on‑call rotation and be able to respond within fifteen minutes.
EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent.
ExperienceMinimum of one (1) year full time experience in the proper operation and maintenance of various types of equipment, and thorough understanding of laws governing operation of motor vehicles. Experience with storm drain installation, concrete/asphalt finishing preferable.
Licenses and/or CertificatesAll levels:
Possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
- Possess and maintain throughout employment a valid Class A, Utah Commercial Driver License (CDL) with tanker endorsements.
- Must demonstrate the ability to proficiently operate sweepers and the vacuum truck within three (3) months of hire date; remains on probation until acquired.
- Must acquire heavy equipment operator certification, on at least one (1) of the following types of heavy equipment: skid steer, backhoe, or loader by an accredited training organization (i.e., Utah LTAP) within six (6) months of hire date; remains on probation until acquired.
- Possess or must be certified within six (6) months of hire by the Utah Department of Transportation in construction signing and flagging; remains on probation until acquired.
