Position: FLEET MASTER TECHNICIAN

Fleet Department Summary

City of St. George Fleet Department invites a Master Technician to support local government by maintaining and servicing over 1,100 assets including emergency vehicles, transit buses, trucks, and automobiles. The Department employs 17 skilled technicians and offers paid training and education through industry leaders such as Pierce Equipment, Cummins, Ford, and GMC. ASE Blue Seal certification and paid ASE testing are available.

The facility is equipped with state‑of‑the‑art diagnostic tools, equipment, and software.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, the Technician will diagnose, maintain, and repair diesel, gasoline, and various other types of vehicles, with an emphasis on medium/heavy duty equipment. The work schedule is four days a week with 10‑hour days from 6 am to 5 pm. Functions
  • Perform skilled mechanical work in diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of a wide variety of light and heavy construction equipment, including fire apparatus and police, water, power, sewer, and street maintenance equipment.
  • Repair and service automobiles and light trucks, including major engine overhauls, adjustments of computer command controls, electronic ignition systems, brakes, clutches, diesel engines, and transmissions.
  • Diagnose drivetrain and exhaust after‑treatment components using sophisticated computer testing equipment; perform adjustments or replace defective parts as required.
  • Perform oxyacetylene and electronic welding as required; fabricate specialized equipment; lay out, cut, and fit material for welding.
  • Perform state safety inspections.
  • Use hydraulic schematics to troubleshoot hydraulic systems.
  • Document repair work in detailed repair notes for future repair order history.
  • Identify and execute effective and economical repair solutions, ensuring proper vehicle performance.
  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks such as lubrication, oil changes, and minor repairs.
  • Up‑fit various vehicles (police, fire, utility) requiring extensive electrical and computer software knowledge.
  • Read and interpret diagnostic data using OBDII technology, programmable logic systems, and laptop computer technology.
  • Teach and mentor Journey and Apprentice Technicians.
  • Assist the shop supervisor with scheduling and supervision of fleet technicians as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Typical Physical and Mental Demands

Work is performed in an automotive repair shop environment with moderately heavy physical activity. Tasks include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, bending, twisting, reaching, and handling small objects. Exposure to heat, cold, wet, humid, windy conditions, fumes, dust, and intermittent noise may occur. Employees may be required to work unconventional shifts and respond to emergencies.

Qualifications Education

High school diploma or equivalent. Training in CAN/multiplexing data systems required.

Experience

Minimum of eight (8) years full‑time experience in automotive/diesel truck or heavy equipment repair, electrical repair, and diagnosis of complex computer systems with current passenger vehicle technology. Extensive knowledge of CAN system network communication and the ability to wire and/or repair components in complete electrical systems.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Must possess ASE Master Certification and maintain certifications; fifteen years of experience may substitute for certification with demonstrated ability.
  • Valid driver’s license and a Utah Commercial Driver License Class B obtained within 6 months and maintained throughout employment.
  • State safety inspection certification for buses and heavy trucks obtained within 90 days.
  • Refrigerant recovery and recycling certification obtained within 90 days.
