Job DescriptionThis position is eligible for a one‑time $4,500 stipend.
There are two positions available for this posting.
This position is for the 2026‑2027 School Year.
Position: Special Education Teacher
St. Helens School District is located 28 miles from downtown Portland in scenic Columbia County. The district seeks dynamic and energetic individuals who are passionate about student success and want to make a difference.
Full‑time (40 hours per week) Special Education Teacher. Candidates with a background in Special Education, Behavior Management, and Social Work are encouraged to apply.
Job SummaryAs a Special Education Teacher, the employee may teach in a variety of settings including inclusionary settings, resource rooms, structured learning centers, social‑emotional learning centers, and supported educational programs. The primary responsibility is to plan for student success based on assessed needs, use data to determine skill levels, set learning goals, and assess progress. This includes leading or assisting in IEP compliance, collaborating with general education teachers on curriculum, developing behavior and safety plans, overseeing para‑professionals, and ensuring compliance with state and federal special education laws.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Provide direct instruction and related services to students with disabilities as identified in the IEP.
- Provide IEP accommodations, modifications, and testing accessibility supports to general education teachers.
- Offer ongoing teacher support through collaboration regarding student needs.
- Provide expertise during Child Study Team meetings, offering tiered support recommendations.
- Work with the evaluation team to support evaluation and identification of eligible students across various disability categories.
- Assess students using formative and summative assessments.
- Develop IEPs based on evaluation and performance data.
- Interpret evaluation results for team decision‑making.
- Coordinate with staff to evaluate and develop instructional programs.
- Maintain Special Education files for all students on caseload.
- Support programming for students requiring feeding, toileting, or medical protocols.
- Adjust instruction based on data.
- Provide instructional support and lesson plan alignment to instructional assistants.
- Modify coursework or offer alternate options as outlined by the IEP.
- Consult with classroom teachers on student progress and adaptations.
- Interpret testing results with building principals.
- Obtain consent forms for testing and placement.
- Participate in training for district‑adopted de‑escalation, restraint, and seclusion programs.
- Attend conferences with parents about IEP goals.
- Comply with all state and federal regulations.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervise students and direct the duties of Special Education paraprofessionals.
QUALIFICATIONS- Successful completion of teacher certification program and valid state certification(s).
- Degree and certification endorsements per Oregon rules for Special Education Teacher.
- Ability to oversee and direct the assigned Special Education Program.
- Knowledge of school board policies, Oregon Administrative Rules, and IDEA.
- Ability to write IEPs, Behavior Support Plans, progress reports, and summarize evaluation data.
- Effective presentation and communication skills with teachers, specialists, parents, and the public.
- Application of mathematical concepts to practical instructional scenarios.
- Analytical skills to establish facts and draw conclusions.
- Use of current research and theory for instructional programs and curriculum selection.
- Maintain effective relationships with students, peers, parents, and community.
- Clear verbal and written communication with parents, students, and staff.
As negotiated in the SHEA agreement.
EVALUATIONIn accordance with negotiated SHEA agreement and district policy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands include regular talking or hearing, frequent walking, sitting, using hands, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, occasional assistance with student mobility, lifting or moving up to 50 pounds, and specific vision requirements including close and distance vision.
