Job Summary

An integral part of the care leadership team, the Hospital Supervisor has responsibility for coordination and delivery of clinical services activities on their assigned shift. In the absence of department or facility leadership, the Supervisor is responsible for the appropriate use of staff, staffing levels, immediate problem solving, management decision–making, and maintaining a safe environment by ensuring adherence to safety regulations, policies and procedures.

The Supervisor provides clinical support and leadership for high‑risk patients or unusual situations, is accountable for patient census, observation status and appropriate bed utilization, and communicates with patients, families and the public to promote positive relations, diffuse problems and address concerns. The Supervisor consults with the Administrator on Call as appropriate, provides supervision and leadership to hospital staff in collaboration with unit/department level leaders, facilitates positive change, ensures quality care and appropriate use of resources in a cost‑effective and efficient manner, and demonstrates critical thinking, problem resolution, mentoring and staff education.

CHGR Hospital Supervisors are REQUIRED to obtain a nursing administration or professional/specialty certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months after becoming eligible to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinate implementation of resource utilization plan and admissions, discharges, and transfers to maximize resources, ensure continuity of care, and control unit budget.
  • Communicate and collaborate with patients, families, staff, management, physicians and units regarding patient, staff and quality care issues.
  • Act as a facilitator or active problem‑solver in complex situations.
  • Use census and acuity program to maintain adequate staffing levels and adjust staffing per established procedures.
  • Maintain fiscal responsibility and report unusual occurrences to the director, administrator on call and risk management.
  • Serve as an informational resource on hospital policies, procedures, protocols, risk management, patient safety, advocacy and management.
  • Facilitate and support the change process.
  • Ensure key leadership is communicated appropriately.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills and problem‑resolution abilities.
  • Provide supervision, direction and support to all in‑house staff for effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Communicate performance issues and concerns to unit or department leadership and follow through with in‑the‑moment performance enhancements.
  • Round throughout the facility, maintain awareness of organizational information and changes.
  • Maintain awareness of high‑risk patients and serve as a clinical resource to support care.
  • Facilitate communication of concerns through the help chain of command and follow up to ensure concerns are addressed.
  • Act as a resource for staff to identify and address ethical issues within nursing and the assigned area.
  • Formulate decisions and actions based on ethical principles and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Advocate for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.
  • Activate contingency plans (e.g., disaster, patient placement with census fluctuations) in collaboration with the Director, Chief Nursing Officer and Administrator on call.
Qualifications
  • Education (Required) – Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) upon hire (location‑specific timelines apply).
  • Preferred Education – Master’s degree (MS, MSN, MBS, MM, MHA, MPH) or 2 years of relevant nursing experience.
  • Experience – 2 years of relevant experience, most recent in a leadership role such as Charge Nurse, Shared Leadership position, Magnet Champion or QSO.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) – State of Michigan license required.
  • BSN must be obtained within 4 to 5 years depending on location (detailed below).
  • Professional/specialty nursing certification required within 12 months of assuming the role.
Certifications & Training
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA or ARC required within 90 days of hire.
