Job Description Position SummaryThe Director of Faculty Development and Continuing Education provides strategic leadership, program management, and operational oversight for the School of Dentistry’s faculty development initiatives, continuing education enterprise, and selected educational special projects. This position advances the School’s mission through the development of innovative faculty development programs, high-quality continuing professional education offerings, accreditation support activities, leadership development initiatives, and educationally focused grant-funded programs.
The Director works collaboratively with the Dean’s Office, Associate Deans, department leadership, faculty, staff, external partners, and community stakeholders to enhance teaching excellence, promote educational innovation, support accreditation compliance, generate continuing education revenue, and strengthen workforce development initiatives. The position also provides leadership for pathway programs that prepare students from educationally and/or academically disadvantaged backgrounds for successful admission to dental school and careers in oral health professions.
This position requires strong project management skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement through data-informed decision making. Periodic travel throughout Missouri and Kansas is required to support continuing education programming and external partnerships.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Faculty Development, Teaching Excellence, Mentoring, and Leadership Development- Provide strategic leadership for the School of Dentistry’s faculty development program.
- Plan, implement, evaluate, and document outcomes for faculty development initiatives including annual faculty in-services, retreats, course director workshops, teaching academies, and Lunch Time Learning programs.
- Establish, implement, and assess educational methodology training and on-boarding programs for new faculty.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive faculty mentoring program for new School of Dentistry faculty to support their transition from clinical practice into academic teaching and scholarship.
- Create resources, training materials, assessment tools, and support structures that promote effective mentoring relationships and faculty success.
- Mentor faculty in evidence-based teaching practices, curriculum development, assessment methods, educational scholarship, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
- Serve as a resource and consultant to faculty developing continuing education courses by providing guidance on instructional design, adult learning principles, effective teaching strategies, learner engagement, and ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) requirements.
- Develop and coordinate a leadership development program for mid‑career faculty interested in advancing leadership skills and preparing for academic administrative roles.
- Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging educational technologies and digital learning tools that enhance classroom engagement, instruction, and assessment.
- Chair the Faculty Development Committee and oversee faculty development initiatives, funding priorities, funding requests, and budget allocations.
- Provide leadership for the School’s continuing education enterprise, including strategic planning, program development, implementation, marketing, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
- Identify, develop, and implement continuing education opportunities that support the strategic priorities of the School of Dentistry.
- Monitor trends in oral health care, professional education, workforce development, and continuing education to identify emerging opportunities for growth and innovation.
- Expand continuing education offerings into community settings, healthcare organizations, professional associations, and private dental practices throughout Missouri and Kansas.
