Equipment Technician Series - St. Joseph Maintenance Facility
The equipment technician performs entry-level skilled work in the maintenance and repair of light vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.
What You’ll Do- Maintain and perform basic repairs to automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders, and other heavy equipment.
- Inspect, service, repair, and overhaul transmissions, engines, clutches, drive lines, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, and ignition systems; repair and install hydraulic controls; tune motors using standard testing equipment; dismantle, repair, and reassemble air compressors, hydraulic jacks, pumps, cylinders, and related equipment.
- Inspect, repair, overhaul, and assemble automotive components such as alternators, distributors, and starters.
- Complete mandated fleet inspections and ensure all equipment meets OSHA standards and all repairs and modifications are done in accordance with operational specifications and safety standards.
- May weld and modify equipment and fabricate parts.
- Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Automotive Technology, OR
- Completion of a formal post-secondary technical training program in automobile or heavy equipment-related repair (at least 30 credit hours or one school year in duration) AND one year of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair, OR
- Two years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
- A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam is required prior to the hire date. Must pass the driving portion of the Class B CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days of hire.
- Valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire.
- Successful completion of a work‑simulation examination and medical‑physical examination.
- Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance.
- Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
- Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
