How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Machinist, you will set up and operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)- Machining Setup and Operation
Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as guides for subsequent machining.
Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required. - Machine Verification and Quality Control
Set up and operate machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
Verify conformance of finished work pieces to specifications.
Verify dimensions and alignment of assemblies.
Monitor work for accuracy, thoroughness, quality, and productivity.
Observe safety and security procedures and use equipment and materials properly. - Assembly, Installation, and Testing
Fit and assemble parts into complete assemblies.
Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment.
Test operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.
Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts. - Tooling, Fixtures, and Fabrication Support
Design and/or develop tools, jigs, and fixtures used in production.
Develop specifications from general descriptions.
Draw sketches of parts or products to be fabricated.
Apply mathematical skills to calculate measurements, rates, ratios, percentages, and machining requirements. - Collaboration and Problem Solving
Confer with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
Communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external customers, team members, and other employees.
Follow instructions and respond to management direction.
Adapt to changes in the work environment, competing demands, delays, or unexpected events.
Support organizational policies, procedures, goals, values, and safety expectations.
- Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- One to three months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and sample parts.
- Ability to write simple correspondence and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
