Job Overview
Security officers provide security, safety, and protection for persons and property. Work is performed under direct supervision of a high ranking officer and involves walking, standing, detaining individuals, preparing reports, and extensive public contact. Reporting is done through written logs, meetings, and observation of duties for compliance with established rules and regulations.
Shift WorkThe position requires regular and irregular shift work, including overnight and holiday shifts, to provide 24/7 security services. Shifts are normally eight or ten hours but may be extended during emergencies, disasters, or shortages. A high percentage of attendance, on‑time arrival, and willingness to work overtime are required.
Incentives and PaySeven percent shift differential pay for midnight shift. Tuition reimbursement and education incentives for higher‑education holders:
- Associate’s degree: $1,200 per year
- Bachelor’s degree: $2,400 per year
- Master’s degree: $4,800 per year
- Doctorate degree: $7,200 per year
- Patrol assigned facility on foot, guarding and protecting persons and property against vandalism, arson, prowlers, and other threats.
- Inspect buildings for open doors or windows, damage, safety hazards, and faulty mechanical problems.
- Respond to emergency radio calls including accidents, bomb threats, fires, and hostage situations.
- Investigate suspected crimes on the premises including larcenies and stolen articles.
- Assist the general public, visitors, and employees by answering questions, locating offices, and escorting to specific locations.
- Report all pertinent data of action taken during a shift by maintaining a written log and giving oral reports to the shift supervisor.
- Restrains and detains persons who damage property or molest or harass persons for arrest by police authority.
- Operate a two‑way communication system to monitor and provide assistance for routine activities and as contact for the medical examiner and investigators.

- Age:
At least 21 years. - Residency:
No residency requirement. Must be a U.S. citizen or possess a valid work permit and apply for U.S. citizenship when eligible. - Education:
Proof of high school education or a State Equivalency Certificate and transcript of scores. - Drug Policy:
No illegal adult drug use or possession of a controlled substance, excluding marijuana, within one year prior to employment. - Tattoo Policy:
No tattoos visible on the face, neck, or head. Tattoos visible in a short‑sleeve uniform are considered by the Chief of Police on a case‑by‑case basis. Applicants must provide photographs and explanations of any visible tattoos. - Vision:
Corrected vision must be 20/20 or better; no minimum uncorrected requirements. - Arrest Record:
Free from conviction of a felony. A Class A misdemeanor conviction constitutes immediate dismissal. - Driver's License:
Valid State Operator's License with five points or fewer on the driving record at the time of application. - Military:
No dishonorable or bad conduct discharge if previously served. Other than honorable discharges are reviewed individually. - Licensing:
Applicant must be able to obtain a security officer license. - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of modern security program practices.
- Knowledge of first aid principles.
- Some knowledge of applicable laws and ordinances.
- Skill in the use and care of firearms.
- Skill in operating Department vehicles.
- Ability to remain alert and detect suspicious or unusual occurrences.
- Ability to use good judgment, discretion, and tact and to act quickly in situations.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to wear and effectively use all Department‑issued uniform and equipment as specified in the Department General Order, Uniforms and Appearance.
