Location: Minneapolis, MN
Pay: $65k-$85k
About the RoleWe are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant with strong nonprofit experience to join our growing finance team. This role will support core accounting functions including accounts payable, payroll processing, month‑end close activities
, and general ledger maintenance.
The ideal candidate is someone who thrives in mission-driven organizations, understands nonprofit accounting requirements, and is eager to grow into a lead accountant role over time.
Key Responsibilities Accounts Payable & Payroll (Primary Focus)- Process full-cycle accounts payable
, including invoice coding, vendor communication, and payment processing. - Maintain vendor records and ensure compliance with W‑9 and 1099 requirements.
- Prepare and process bi-weekly or semi-monthly payroll
, ensuring accuracy of hours, deductions, and allocations. - Assist employees with payroll-related questions and maintain payroll documentation.
- Support month-end close tasks including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
- Assist with maintaining the general ledger and ensuring accurate coding to grants, programs, and funding sources.
- Prepare supporting schedules for financial statements and audits.
- Collaborate with program leaders to ensure proper financial tracking and reporting.
- Assist with grant tracking and allocation of expenses to restricted funding.
- Help maintain compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and internal controls.
- Support external CPA firm during annual audit and Form 990 preparation.
- Take on increasing responsibilities with the opportunity to grow into a Lead Accountant role.
- Support process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and automation.
- Provide cross-training and support to junior team members as skills develop.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 2–4 years of accounting experience
, preferably in a nonprofit environment
. - Proficiency in GAAP and understanding of fund accounting.
- Experience with AP processing and payroll (ADP, Paychex, or similar).
- Strong Excel skills and comfort with accounting systems.
- Experience with nonprofit accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, Quick Books Nonprofit, MIP Fund Accounting).
- Knowledge of grant accounting or federal/state funding requirements.
- Desire for long-term career growth in accounting and leadership.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Collaborative, positive, and solution-oriented attitude.
