Reports To: Accounting Manager / Controller

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Pay: $65k-$85k

About the Role

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant with strong nonprofit experience to join our growing finance team. This role will support core accounting functions including accounts payable, payroll processing, month‑end close activities
, and general ledger maintenance.

The ideal candidate is someone who thrives in mission-driven organizations, understands nonprofit accounting requirements, and is eager to grow into a lead accountant role over time.

Key Responsibilities Accounts Payable & Payroll (Primary Focus)
  • Process full-cycle accounts payable
    , including invoice coding, vendor communication, and payment processing.
  • Maintain vendor records and ensure compliance with W‑9 and 1099 requirements.
  • Prepare and process bi-weekly or semi-monthly payroll
    , ensuring accuracy of hours, deductions, and allocations.
  • Assist employees with payroll-related questions and maintain payroll documentation.
Month-End & Financial Reporting
  • Support month-end close tasks including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Assist with maintaining the general ledger and ensuring accurate coding to grants, programs, and funding sources.
  • Prepare supporting schedules for financial statements and audits.
  • Collaborate with program leaders to ensure proper financial tracking and reporting.
Nonprofit Accounting & Compliance
  • Assist with grant tracking and allocation of expenses to restricted funding.
  • Help maintain compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and internal controls.
  • Support external CPA firm during annual audit and Form 990 preparation.
  • Take on increasing responsibilities with the opportunity to grow into a Lead Accountant role.
  • Support process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and automation.
  • Provide cross-training and support to junior team members as skills develop.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 2–4 years of accounting experience
    , preferably in a nonprofit environment
    .
  • Proficiency in GAAP and understanding of fund accounting.
  • Experience with AP processing and payroll (ADP, Paychex, or similar).
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort with accounting systems.
Preferred
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, Quick Books Nonprofit, MIP Fund Accounting).
  • Knowledge of grant accounting or federal/state funding requirements.
  • Desire for long-term career growth in accounting and leadership.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Collaborative, positive, and solution-oriented attitude.
