Overview

Provide leadership and staff coordination to deliver exemplary customer service in the application of state construction codes and related city ordinances for the public’s benefit. Other responsibilities include problem solving and assisting citizens, contractors, and staff during the plan review and inspection process; communicating effectively with people from all cultures and backgrounds; and representing the city in a courteous, helpful, and professional manner.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the building official in administering state construction codes for building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and other applicable components in coordination with city ordinances to ensure safe and durable structures within the community.
  • Perform plan reviews and inspections.
    • Perform plan review and inspection of building, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
    • Meet with developers, architects, and engineers in project development.
    • Ensure inspection and correction notice follow-up is complete and documented.
  • Assist the building official with operation of the construction codes division to ensure effective service delivery.
    • Assist with administering Project Dox’s plan review for all inspectors.
    • Develop, implement and maintain procedures to process service requests in a timely manner.
    • Encourage staff growth and success by providing ongoing training, development, and guidance.
    • Effectively lead inspectors, coordinate and assign work to maintain high service delivery level.
    • Supervises inspectors when the building official is unavailable.
    • Provide regular communication to building official on daily operations.
  • Assist in leading the department toward community-oriented inspections.
    • Develop information, handouts, videos, and other effective communication to provide citizens with helpful information.
    • Maintain an inviting and helpful environment for customers.
    • Integrate code administration with other services to improve community livability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Assist with property maintenance program, ensure good working relationships and transfer of knowledge. Serve as resource and provide inspections as needed.
    • Coordinate effective use of enforcement tools and legal process to achieve compliance when other methods of communication have not succeeded.
    • Facilitate meetings with designers, contractors, residents, and inspectors to resolve questions and discover solutions to problems or concerns.
    • Participate in code organizations to represent the city’s interest and stay current on construction methods and code development.
    • Coordinate closely with staff and supervisors from other departments to deliver outstanding city services.
    • Perform other duties and assume responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • Associate degree in building inspection technology or equivalent experience.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Certified as a MN State Building Official.
    • Five years of experience as an inspector in plan review and related inspections.
    • Currently in a senior inspector level role or equivalent.
    • DLI delegation for public buildings and state licensed facilities.
    • Skills in mediation, complaint resolution and problem solving.
    • Ability to physically move about all areas of construction properties to carry out duties.
    • Experience working at the City of St. Louis Park.
    • Supervisory experience.
    • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
    • Minnesota Plumbing or Electrical License.
    • I.C.B.O. certification as a C.B.O. or in building inspection and/or plan review.
