Pay Range: $40,000 - $50,000 annually

The Building Substitute Teacher is a full-time faculty member responsible for providing instructional continuity and classroom coverage across the school day in support of students and faculty. This role serves as an on-site substitute teacher who is available each day to step into classrooms as needed when a teacher is absent or additional instructional coverage is required. The role may provide both short-term and long-term classroom coverage, including coverage for extended absences such as maternity leaves or other planned or unplanned leaves.

The Building Substitute Teacher works within Groves Academy’s specialized learning environment serving students with learning differences. Instruction and support should reflect the school’s commitment to structured, student-centered, and developmentally responsive practice. The Building Substitute Teacher helps maintain consistency for students by implementing lesson plans, supporting classroom routines, and fostering a safe, positive, and predictable learning environment.

Because this is a full-time school-based role, the Building Substitute Teacher may also be assigned other responsibilities when substitute coverage is not needed. These responsibilities may include student supervision, instructional support, small-group support, classroom assistance, clerical or operational support, and other duties as assigned by school leadership.

The Building Substitute Teacher collaborates with teachers, specialists, division leadership, and other staff to ensure that student needs are met and that school operations continue smoothly throughout the day.

• Provide classroom instruction in the absence of the regular teacher
• Provide both short-term and long-term classroom coverage, including assuming primary responsibility for a class during extended staff absences when assigned
• Implement lesson plans and instructional activities prepared by the classroom teacher or division leadership during short-term coverage assignments
• Plan and deliver instruction, in collaboration with division leadership, during long-term coverage assignments
• Maintain continuity of instruction and classroom routines to minimize disruption to student learning
• Teach individuals, small groups, or full classes across grade levels and subject areas as assigned
• Create a safe, calm, and productive classroom environment that supports student engagement and success
• Use appropriate classroom management strategies to maintain expectations and support student regulation
• Adapt support and instructional delivery in response to student needs and the demands of the classroom setting
• Support students in completing assigned work and participating meaningfully in classroom activities

• Supervise students in classrooms, transitions, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other common areas as assigned
• Maintain awareness of student safety, behavior, and well‑being throughout the school day
• Support students in a manner that reflects understanding of learning differences, executive functioning needs, and social‑emotional development
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students
• Communicate student concerns, behavioral issues, or notable classroom events to the regular teacher and/or supervisor as appropriate

• Collaborate professionally with teachers, specialists, division directors, and other staff members to support smooth daily operations
• Communicate clearly and professionally regarding lesson implementation, student participation, and any issues that arise during classroom coverage
• Leave timely and helpful notes for regular teachers regarding student progress, completed work, and classroom events
• Provide information to supervisors and colleagues in written, verbal, and in‑person formats as needed
