Activity Specialist - Junior Naturalist Coordinator

To provide leadership and coordination of the summer junior naturalist program at Westwood Hills Nature Center.

This position is seasonal and part-time, working up to 30 hours per week from June - August 2026.

• Coordinate the summer junior naturalist volunteer program.
• Provide direction to and evaluation of Junior Naturalists.
• Prepare a Junior Naturalist work schedule according to the needs of staff and the availability and interests of each Junior Naturalist.
• Lead volunteer orientation and train lead Junior Naturalists.
• Maintain communication with volunteers, parents, and nature center staff.
• Plan and lead special events and the City Council recognition and reception.
• Prepare an end of summer report including an overall evaluation of the program.
• Maintain accurate volunteer records.
• Represent the Parks and Recreation Department in a professional manner.

• Knowledge or experience working or volunteering with youth.
• Ability to be organized, work independently, and take direction.

• Prior experience working or participating in summer recreational programs including the junior naturalist program or junior park leaders program.
• Experience caring for and/or handling program animals.
• Basic knowledge of water garden maintenance.
• Demonstrated cultural competence and comfort with supporting the city’s strategic objectives for advancing racial equity.
