The Role

Our client, an innovative medical device organization focused on advancing therapies for patients with chronic gastrointestinal conditions, is seeking a Principal Firmware Engineer to join their team in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. This role will play a critical part in developing next‑generation implantable technologies that improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

As a senior technical leader, you will design and optimize embedded firmware for active implantable medical devices, ensuring performance, safety, and regulatory compliance within a highly controlled environment.

Job Description
  • Design, develop, and test firmware for active implantable medical devices with a focus on reliability, safety, and performance under strict power and size constraints
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including hardware engineering, software development, quality, and regulatory to ensure seamless system integration
  • Develop and validate secure communication protocols such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and proprietary RF systems
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations including FDA requirements, ISO 13485, and IEC 62304
  • Optimize embedded systems for ultra‑low power consumption to extend implantable device lifespan
  • Perform risk analysis, debugging, and verification to ensure product safety and effectiveness
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation including design specifications, validation reports, and test plans
  • Support clinical trials and post‑market activities by analyzing device performance and implementing firmware updates
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and technical decision‑making as a principal‑level engineer
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of firmware development experience in embedded systems
  • At least 5 years of experience working with active implantable medical devices
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ programming in resource‑constrained environments
  • Experience with real‑time operating systems (RTOS) and/or bare‑metal development
  • Knowledge of medical device standards and regulatory frameworks (FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 62304)
  • Experience with low‑power wireless communication protocols such as BLE or similar
  • Hands‑on experience with tools such as Git‑based version control and issue tracking systems (e.g., Jira)
  • Familiarity with static code analysis and unit testing tools (e.g., PC‑Lint, GTest)
  • Strong understanding of embedded systems architecture and hardware‑software integration
  • Proficiency with debugging tools including JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles for embedded or medical devices, including secure data transmission and encryption
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly regulated, quality‑driven environment
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with high attention to detail
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with battery management systems for implantable devices
  • Familiarity with Agile or iterative development methodologies
