The Senior Accountant – Projects is responsible for the financial management and accounting of construction projects from project setup through closeout. This role partners closely with Project Managers, Operations, Sales, and leadership teams to ensure accurate project financial reporting, timely customer invoicing, effective job cost management, and compliance with company accounting policies.
The ideal candidate possesses construction accounting experience, including job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) analysis, progress billing, change order management, retainage tracking, and revenue recognition.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Project Financial Management- Maintain financial records for assigned construction projects.
- Monitor project costs, revenue, profitability, and budget performance.
- Analyze project financial results and identify cost overruns, billing issues, and margin risks.
- Prepare and review project profitability reports and variance analyses.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure project financial information is accurate and current.
- Review and monitor labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor, and miscellaneous project costs.
- Ensure costs are charged to the appropriate projects and cost codes.
- Investigate and resolve project accounting discrepancies.
- Assist with month-end job cost reconciliations.
- Prepare progress billings, milestone billings, time and material invoices, and AIA billings.
- Track and manage change orders, retainage, and contract modifications.
- Support revenue recognition processes and WIP reporting.
- Ensure billing complies with contract requirements and customer expectations.
- Partner with Project Managers to resolve billing disputes and collection challenges.
- Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting.
- Review under billings and over billings.
- Monitor project completion percentages and support revenue forecasting.
- Provide financial reporting and insights to management.
- Monitor project accounts receivable balances.
- Assist with collection efforts and customer payment follow-up.
- Research and resolve customer billing questions.
- Support cash flow management through timely invoicing and payment resolution.
- Confirm all project costs have been recorded prior to closeout.
- Ensure final billing, retainage releases, and subcontractor obligations are completed.
- Assist with project audits and documentation requirements.
- Maintain complete project accounting records.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
- Support internal and external audits.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and reporting efficiency.
