CDM Smith's CEI team in Columbia, Missouri is seeking a candidate to inspect and monitor construction activities at the project site (I‑70 Corridor). Inspector must be able to perform the most complex inspection activities for at least two of the five categories of construction inspection:
1) Roadway
2) Bridges
3) Drainage
4) Erosion & Control
5) Maintenance & Traffic. Candidate will work under limited supervision or direct supervision depending on demonstrated knowledge for the assignment. The role requires knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in highway construction; knowledge of geometry and basic mathematics; ability to read, interpret, and explain construction plans and drawings, contract provisions, and specifications; and strong communication skills.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform both complex and routine/standard inspections of construction to evaluate if appropriate materials and construction processes are used, and that construction conforms to plans, specifications, and special provisions.
  • Use higher‑grade equipment and perform complex calculations to conduct construction inspections.
  • Work under limited supervision or direct supervision depending on demonstrated knowledge for the assignment.
  • Review drawings to prepare for construction inspection.
  • Understand the design of the construction being inspected, document and communicate the results of the inspection to the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Certifications from a State Highway Agency or National Entity such as ACI (American Concrete Institute) or NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) in earthwork, asphalt, and concrete if required by the client or jurisdiction. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Six years of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. Equivalent directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
  • Basic knowledge of arithmetic.

  • Basic knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in highway construction.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans and drawings, contract provisions, and specifications.
