About the Role

Western Specialty Contractors Internship program is designed to hire students during their freshman year through their senior year. The program will allow students to work in a field environment as well as an office environment. During this time, they will gain valuable experience that can be utilized to further their potential for full‑time employment with Western.

The intern and their supervisor will develop a personalized training plan consisting of several tasks. The plan will depend on the student’s education, learning expectations, experience level, and branch needs. The intern and supervisor will meet periodically to monitor the program’s effectiveness.

What you’ll do Marketing/Business Development
  • Help develop marketing tracking
  • Assist sales project managers in scheduling, coordinating, and presenting at workshops, seminars, lunch and learns and other business development opportunities
  • Help implement the branch's marketing plans
  • Participate in sales calls with the branch manager or sales/project managers
  • Assist branch staff through all phases of business development.
Field Operations
  • Obtain permits, check zoning and code requirements, and arrange temporary facilities and utility services
  • Supervise punch‑list and quality assurance activities, conduct safety inspections
  • Prepare for and schedule city, county, fire, etc. inspections
  • Assist with surveying, testing, sample collection, shop drawing correction, filing and checking material deliveries
  • Verify work hours, materials, and other elements necessary for tracking productivity and/or work in place
  • Assist with schedule and cost control, inventory control and daily job reporting
  • Learn and understand the restoration trades
  • Other duties as practical for intern placement
Office Operations
  • Prepare quantity takeoffs, call vendors and/or subcontractors for proposals
  • Check drawings and specifications for completeness, discrepancies, etc.
  • Attend pre‑bid, bid openings, job site, in‑house sales, foreman and safety meetings, etc.
  • Take notes, make records, and complete forms
  • Assist with project record keeping, prepare shop drawings and assist with cost control records
  • Participate in different aspects of Business Development
  • Other duties as practical for intern placement
Project Management
  • Assist Project Managers and Superintendents at a high responsibility level as practical
  • Plan and schedule, prepare requests for progress payment, and process change orders
  • Create and track construction schedules, submittal schedules, submittal logs and process submittals
  • Procure and expedite materials
  • Observe and create/update minutes for jobsite meetings (subcontractor, foreman, safety, etc.)
  • Update/redline drawings, etc.
  • Other duties as practical for intern placement
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in a 4‑year degree program
  • Willingness to learn and work
  • Willingness to enjoy an enriching internship experience
  • Ability to commute to and from the branch office each day
