Architectural History Specialist (Temp-to-Hire)

Trileaf Corporation is a nationwide environmental, architecture, and engineering consulting firm that assists clients with environmental due diligence, regulatory compliance, and engineering & architectural design. Trileaf serves the wireless communications, real estate, and financial industries from its headquarters in St. Louis, MO and many branch offices throughout the U.S.

The Architectural History Specialist (Temp-to-Hire) supports Trileaf's cultural resources team with architectural resource surveys, archival/SHPO research, and technical documentation for infrastructure and development projects. This entry-level role assists senior staff with Effects Determinations, historic context statements, and field evaluations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct architectural resource surveys, including field identification, photography, and documentation of buildings, structures, and districts
  • Perform archival research and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) file searches to identify previously recorded historic resources
  • Assist in developing project Effects Determinations and historic context statements
  • Prepare Historic Resources tables and supporting documentation for technical reports
  • Travel to project sites (approximately 10% of the time) for field evaluations of effects
  • Coordinate with project managers, senior staff, and outside agencies (SHPO, THPO, local historic commissions), and perform QA/QC on deliverables
  • Maintain accurate field notes and project files, and comply with company health and safety protocols

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong research, writing, and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to work-product quality
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments and deadlines
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel for field evaluations (approximately 10%)

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with SHPO/THPO research procedures and Section 106/NHPA review
  • Familiarity with National Register of Historic Places criteria and historic context development
  • Experience with GIS or digital photo documentation tools

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Architecture, History, Art History, or a related field
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience; internship or field school experience in historic preservation is a plus

Licenses and

Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license required

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and navigate uneven outdoor terrain at historic building sites
  • Ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs. (e.g., cameras, field gear) and operate cameras, measuring tools, and computers
  • Sufficient visual acuity to read maps and records, and to identify architectural features and site conditions
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and tolerate outdoor weather conditions

Work Environment and Travel:

  • Hybrid, office- and field-based position; work is performed in the office, at project sites, and while traveling
  • Travel for field evaluations is required, approximately 10% of the time, with occasional overnight travel
  • Work may occasionally be performed at older/historic properties or active construction sites

Potential Hazards:

  • May involve entering older or historic buildings that could contain asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, or mold; appropriate PPE and site-specific safety protocols are used to manage these exposures
