Job Description

The Department of Sociology at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis (UMSL) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position at the Assistant Teaching Professor rank to begin in August 2026.

We welcome applications from professionals with an advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Sociology or a closely aligned discipline, with experience as an instructor of quantitative research methods and sociology courses. Areas of teaching for this position include introductory sociology, general social science research, quantitative methods, social statistics, urban studies and community-engaged research. Opportunities to teach other areas exist based on department needs and faculty expertise.

Applicants should enjoy student-centered teaching focused on success for both traditional and non-traditional students. Responsibilities of this position include: teaching four courses each fall and spring semester with in-person and online modalities, advising undergraduate students, supervising undergraduate student research, and participating in department- and university-level service and governance. This position also holds the potential for dedicated partnerships with the UMSL Honors College and the UMSL Advanced Credit Program.

This position will hold an academic (9-month), non-tenure-track, teaching appointment. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants must be able to start work on campus by August 2026.

Qualifications

Your success in the hiring process requires the following experience and abilities:

* An advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Sociology, or closely aligned discipline with a broad knowledge of sociological topics, by the time of appointment.

* Evidence of successfully instructing introductory sociology and social research courses at the undergraduate level.

* Expertise in quantitative social science research and methods, including social statistics using modern statistical software tools (R is preferred).

* Experience with community-based research in an urban setting.

* Experience with urban sociology and/or the sociology of business and work is a plus.

The Department of Sociology offers a broad undergraduate curriculum that aligns with UMSL Core Values and provides a community-based sociological education. The department is home to six full-time faculty members and over 150 students. In addition to BA and BS degrees in Sociology, the department offers UMSL's interdisciplinary degrees in Organizational Leadership (BA) and Data Science with Social Science Emphasis (BS), as well as minors or certificates in Gender Studies, Gerontology, Urban Studies, and Veterans Studies.
