Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Operations & Chief of Staff, the Director of Faculty & Staff Development will ensure the orderly operations of faculty affairs, serve as the primary point of contact with the HR Business Partner for the school’s human resources functions, and support the professional development of faculty and staff. The director will partner closely with school leadership and advise on policy, procedures, guidelines, and operational processes related to faculty affairs and administration.

The role also involves identifying opportunities to improve systems and processes and ensuring consistency and effectiveness across faculty‑related operations.

Core skills: Exceptional relationship building, attention to detail, outstanding oral and written communication, strong computer skills, the ability to handle multiple projects on rolling deadlines, and the capacity to manage confidential information with sensitivity and discretion.

Duties & Responsibilities

Faculty Affairs

  • Lead administrative and operational support for Brown School faculty affairs, ensuring personnel, governance, recruitment, finance, communications, and event planning functions are executed with attention to deadlines, accuracy, and a positive school culture, and provide support to the Promotion & Tenure Committee and Personnel Advisory Committee.
  • Manage all aspects of the annual review process, including planning, coordinating, and supporting faculty annual reviews.
  • Coordinate faculty recruitment visits.

Faculty and Staff Support and Development Program Coordination

  • Act as the school liaison with WashU Human Resources and the assigned HR Business Partner, ensuring timely and compassionate handling of all human resources actions in line with WashU policies and legal guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the HR Business Partner, Dean’s office, and Operations to design onboarding and orientation best practices and procedures for faculty and staff.
  • Work with unit leaders to ensure supervisors consistently support staff in meeting organizational objectives; identify areas for additional guidance, training, or clearer expectations; and develop mechanisms that promote staff productivity and alignment with school priorities.
  • Develop and distribute communications regarding faculty & staff development activities.
  • Coordinate faculty and staff development events, workshops, programs, seminars, learning communities, and conferences to improve teaching, learning, and overall organizational effectiveness.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
  • Normal office environment; occasional movement to on‑ and off‑campus locations.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and/or experience sufficient to meet the minimum requirement.

Work Experience: Five years of relevant experience in higher education or a similar professional environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in social work or a related field and five years of experience in higher education and/or faculty affairs.
  • Extensive professional experience in faculty affairs, social work education, higher education administration, human resources management, organizational development, event planning, and workshop development for adult learners.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, balance multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and stay within budget.
  • Strong attention to detail, quality, and accuracy.
  • Experience with budgeting and financial management.
  • Familiarity with HR guidelines.
  • Committee management skills, including agenda setting and group facilitation, with a track record of advancing high‑achieving teams to meet goals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship‑building skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including comfort presenting to and writing for large audiences.
  • Team orientation and cross‑training collaboration.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
