Theater Arts Teacher

Normandy Schools Collaborative (NSC) is committed to preparing global leaders for college, career and productive citizenship by empowering a community of confident learners and valuing the unique contribution of every student.

To plan, organize, and implement student success in academic and interpersonal skills through academic and/or career vocational courses of study and by implementing district approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Normandy Schools Collaborative seeks a dynamic person to teach acting and technical theater classes at Normandy Middle School to rebuild our program at the secondary level. NSC's Fine and Performing Arts programs are collaborative, student-centered, and process-oriented and seek to provide their students an opportunity to recognize their particular gifts and foster their full creative potential.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Teaches all elements of a comprehensive theater arts program.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of all students.
  • Organizes, plans, and directs the respective play including being responsible for: all publicity and programs, costume and prop rental and purchase, lighting sound design and application, set design and construction, securing ushers, organizing and managing ticket sales, developing a rehearsal schedule, and any other duty necessary for the success of a production.
  • Supervises script selection for all public performances.
  • Supervises the budget for both the curricular and extra curricular theater programs.
  • Orders all supplies and materials necessary for theater-related activities in accordance with established district procedures and budget allocations.
  • Establishes performance requirements, enforces academic requirements, verifies each student's eligibility to participate in theater activities.
  • Works with building administration to maintain the calendar and schedule of all events in the Little Theater for the middle school, district, and community activities in the Little Theater.
  • Works with building administration to coordinate the student worker program in operation of all systems in the Little Theater.
  • Knowledge of lighting equipment and design (maintain/program equipment/pre-set panels and create a basic light plot for events).
  • Working knowledge of a sound system containing wireless microphones and monitors.
  • Working knowledge of video equipment contained in the Little Theater.
  • Knowledge required to safely manage a scene shop and all tools.
  • Knowledge required to safely manage a single purchase fly system and rigging.
  • Oversees proper organization and storage of stock theatrical units and school-owned equipment and material.
  • Designs and conducts recruitment/outreach programs to attract new theater participants.
  • Sponsors the chapter of the International Thespian Society.
  • Additional compensation to produce and direct the Fall Play and Spring Musical, and Student-Directed One Act Plays.
  • Evening and weekend supervision may be required with additional compensation.
  • Collaboration with other Fine and Performing Arts department staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff.

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
