Job Summary

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) Catechist is responsible for providing faith formation to students through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd method atSt. Gerard Majella Catholic School. Working within the specially prepared Atrium environment, the Catechist guides children in developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through Scripture, liturgy, prayer, and hands-on materials that foster spiritual growth. This position supports the mission of Catholic education by nurturing the faith development of students in accordance with Catholic teachings and traditions.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and facilitate Catechesis of the Good Shepherd sessions in accordance with CGS methodology and Catholic doctrine.
  • Prepare and maintain the Atrium environment, materials, and learning experiences.
  • Present age-appropriate lessons based on Scripture, liturgy, sacraments, and Catholic teachings.
  • Guide students in prayer, reflection, contemplation, and faith-centered activities.
  • Foster a peaceful, respectful, and welcoming environment that encourages spiritual growth.
  • Observe and support each child s individual faith journey and developmental needs.
  • Collaborate with school administration, faculty, parish staff, and parents to support students  faith formation.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and program records as required.
  • Ensure the proper care, organization, and inventory of Atrium materials and supplies.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, faith formation opportunities, retreats, and professional development as required.
  • Follow all diocesan, school, and Safe Environment policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and school information.
  • Serve as a positive witness to the Catholic faith through personal conduct and professional interactions.
  • Support and uphold the mission, values, and teachings of St. Gerard Majella Catholic School and the Catholic Church.
Qualifications
  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church and committed to living and sharing the Catholic faith.
  • Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level I Certification required; additional CGS formation levels preferred.
  • Knowledge of Catholic theology, Scripture, liturgy, and child faith development.
  • Previous experience teaching, catechizing, or working with children in a faith formation or educational setting preferred.
  • Ability to create and maintain a prepared Atrium environment consistent with CGS principles.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, faculty, clergy, and parish staff.
  • Demonstrated patience, professionalism, discretion, and a nurturing approach to teaching.
  • Basic computer proficiency for communication and recordkeeping.
  • Successful completion of required background checks, Safe Environment training, and any diocesan certification requirements.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Catholic education and the spiritual formation of children.
