Intramotev is seeking a Systems Engineer, Regulation & Certification to lead our efforts in securing federal approval for our groundbreaking autonomous rail vehicles. You will be the crucial bridge between our cutting-edge engineering team and regulatory bodies like the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
This is not a typical systems engineering role. Your primary objective is to navigate the complex regulatory landscape, shaping our design, development, and testing processes to meet and exceed the stringent safety and certification requirements for operation on the national rail network. You will own the certification strategy, translate regulations into engineering requirements, and build the safety case that allows our technology to be deployed commercially.
This position is full-time, based in our St. Louis, MO headquarters.
Key Responsibilities- Lead Regulatory Engagement: Serve as the primary engineering point of contact with regulatory agencies like the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), presenting our technology, understanding their concerns, and collaboratively developing paths to approval.
- Develop Certification Strategy: Define and execute the end-to-end certification roadmap for our autonomous systems, from initial concept through operational deployment.
- Author the Safety Case: Lead the development and documentation of the comprehensive safety case for our vehicles, including hazard analyses (FMEA, FHA), fault tree analyses, and safety integrity level (SIL) assessments.
- Translate Regulations into Requirements: Decompose federal regulations, industry standards (e.g., AREMA, IEEE), and safety principles into clear, verifiable system and subsystem requirements for our hardware and software teams.
- Oversee Verification & Validation (V&V): Define and oversee the V&V plans necessary to demonstrate compliance and prove system safety to regulators. This includes specifying test procedures, analyzing results, and authoring final compliance reports.
- Drive Safety-Critical Design: Work hand-in-hand with cross-functional engineering teams to guide design decisions and architecture, ensuring our systems are certifiable from the ground up.
- Customer Support: Perform limited domestic and international travel in support of customer deliveries, testing, demonstrations, and regulatory engagements.
- Work within dynamic teams of 3-10 members on diverse projects.

- Bachelor s Degree in an engineering discipline or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of systems engineering experience in a safety-critical or highly-regulated industry (e.g., aerospace, defense, medical devices, automotive, rail).
- Direct experience interacting with a federal regulatory agency (e.g.,
FRA, FAA, FDA, NHTSA ) to achieve product certification, waivers, or approvals. - Proven experience developing and validating safety-critical systems (hardware and software) in accordance with industry standards (e.g., DO-178C, ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or similar).
