The entry‑level Mechanical/Industrial Piping Estimator will be tasked primarily with the preparation of discipline‑specific estimates supporting large multi‑discipline efforts or smaller independent estimates. This position primarily focuses on mechanical/metal trades consisting of structural steel for pipe supports, piping, welding and boiler making. The estimator will be responsible for building estimates that include installation, demolition and modifications to mechanical and piping systems, and structural steel erection related to mechanical / pipe supports.
Responsibilities- Evaluate all contract documents including bid drawings, specifications, general conditions and, if necessary, visit the project site.
- Identify and quantify piping materials, valves, specialty items, instruments, and typical pipe supports.
- Read and understand the scope of work, pipe specifications, and perform quantity takeoff for piping and mechanical systems.
- Record items taken off from piping documents on a standard takeoff sheet and categorize them by their proper pipe specification.
- Read a client‑provided piping bill of materials.
- Take off items shown on Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Take off items shown on piping isometric drawings, understanding the constructability from a constructability standpoint.
- Take off items shown on piping orthographic (plan) drawings.
- Organize the take‑off process to conform to bid breakdown forms and submittals.
- Estimate small piping projects with minimal documentation based on field experience.
- Visualize what is not apparent or missing from project documentation and mitigate potential risks.
- Maintain a list of clarifications, assumptions, and qualifications identified as risks and discrepancies during proposal development.
- Assist with determining installation schemes to establish project schedule, duration, crew sizing, and geographic challenges.
- Apply company historical rate and production information to estimates.
- Have a basic understanding of trades other than piping, such as paint, insulation, scaffolding, etc.
- Review available plans and specifications to ensure estimated materials are compliant.
