Location: St. Louis

At Air Products, our purpose is to bring people together to reimagine what's possible, collaborate and innovate solutions to the world's most significant energy and environmental sustainability challenges. Grow with us as we embark on building tomorrow together by being the safest, most diverse and most profitable industrial gas company in the world.

Reimagine What's Possible

The Chemical Process Engineer is a floor-focused role responsible for the production process of a manufacturing product family. This position requires a "hands‑on" approach to process sustainability, continuous improvement, and waste reduction. The successful candidate will spend significant time on the production floor, engaging directly with equipment and operations teams to accelerate the deployment of new technology and provide real‑time recommendations for safety, quality, and capacity improvements.

Required

Skills / Abilities
  • Direct Process Sustainment
    :
Take ownership of product/process sustainment by working side‑by‑side with Operations and Quality teams. This includes being physically present for equipment installation, operational qualification, and the manual optimization of recipes for critical processes.

  • On-the-Floor Operational Excellence
    :
Act as a principal leader in process sustainability by targeting inefficiencies through direct observation. Work daily with support teams to reduce scrap, identify bottlenecks, and implement process upgrades.

  • Technical Troubleshooting & Support
    :
Provide immediate technical knowledge for equipment stops/starts and root cause analysis of customer complaints. Regularly interface with production to provide real‑time supply issue resolution and equipment monitoring.

  • Technical Documentation Ownership
    :
You will be responsible for reading, creating, and maintaining accurate P&IDs to ensure they reflect real‑world field changes and support safe, efficient troubleshooting.

  • Data & Process Validation
    :
Understand and apply Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) to open‑ended problems found on the line. Implement and document results of test plans directly in the process to ensure all specifications are met.

  • Project & Development Support
    :
Assist with the design, budget, and installation of new gas and chemical systems. While this role supports project management, the focus remains on the successful mechanical and electrical integration and commissioning of equipment into the plant environment.

Minimum Hiring Requirements
  • Education
    :
Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering

  • Experience
    :
At least 7 years of experience in customized chemical facilities, with a proven track record of supporting manufacturing facilities on a daily, hands‑on basis.

  • Technical Drive
: A healthy appetite for being "in the thick of it" on the production floor. Demonstrated troubleshooting skills and a logical, systematic approach to real-time problem‑solving are essential.

  • System Documentation
    :
Strong proficiency in P&IDs is essential. You must be able to translate complex physical systems into clear diagrams and use existing drawings to diagnose process issues quickly.

  • Project Management
    :
Basic experience or interest in project management (timelines, contractor interaction, and equipment implementation) is a plus. We are committed to training and developing these skills for the right candidate.

  • Soft Skills
    :
Superb communication and interpersonal skills. Must show initiative and thrive in a fast‑paced, collaborative team environment where responsibilities are shared and results are communicated clearly to leadership.
