Overview

Under general supervision, perform work of moderate difficulty in securing information for regulation and control of industrial wastes, treatment plant discharges and stream pollution.

Essential Functions
  • Obtain representative samples of industrial wastes at designated locations
  • Collect water samples from various sewage treatment plants and streams within the District for monitoring purposes
  • Obtain information on industrial wastewater flow and on the characteristics thereof
  • Perform specified field analysis to determine water quality and wastewater characteristics
  • Install, operate, calibrate and maintain field sampling, flow measuring and various other monitoring equipment
  • Assist in the compilation and tabulation of field sampling data
  • Assist in locating sources of industrial and other wastes in sewers, treatment plants and streams
  • Use various electronic instruments and other monitoring instruments
  • Prepare reports and notes that reflect sampling procedures and site conditions and provide important and accurate site information
  • Maintain good professional working relationships with industrial personnel and the public

Training and Experience
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Vocational school with courses in mathematics, chemistry and mechanics
  • Two (2) years of experience in pollution sampling, analysis and related public contact work
Desired Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Good knowledge of hydraulics and mechanics as related to wastewater or waste collection
  • Good knowledge in operating, calibrating and maintaining a variety of both simple and complex field equipment and instruments to compile information and data, and record instrument readings
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and use of safety equipment
  • Skill in applying approved techniques in making water quality analysis and inspections
  • Ability to keep field notes and make reports
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to meet and talk effectively with industry representatives and the public
Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state in which employee resides
