Director of Mechanical & Plumbing VDC
Position Overview
A leading mechanical contractor is looking to bring on a VDC Director for their Mechanical and Plumbing practice to deliver high-quality, constructible MEP models and coordinated design-to-construction workflows. This role is responsible for defining VDC strategy, establishing modeling standards and QA/QC processes, driving Revit-based MEP production excellence, and aligning virtual design efforts with project delivery, fabrication and field installation to improve schedule, cost and quality outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the Mechanical & Plumbing VDC strategy, standards, templates and BIM execution plans across portfolios.
- Oversee and mentor a multi-disciplinary VDC team of Revit/BIM modelers, coordinators and technicians; hire, coach and manage performance and professional development.
- Provide technical leadership for Revit-based MEP modeling, family creation, system templates, and advanced modeling techniques (routing, fittings, hanger systems).
- Lead coordination and clash-detection workflows using Navisworks and federated models; resolve constructability issues with design teams, trade partners and field leadership.
- Establish and enforce QA/QC procedures, model checklists, LOD/LOI requirements and sign-off processes to ensure accuracy and constructability.
- Collaborate with project managers, design consultants, trade contractors and fabrication teams to integrate prefabrication, modularization and shop-drawing workflows.
- Identify and deploy automation and productivity tools (Dynamo, scripting, BIM 360/Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit add-ins) to increase modeling efficiency and reduce rework.
- Track VDC metrics (clash rates, RFIs, coordination hours, prefabrication yields) and report KPI-driven improvements to senior leadership and clients.
- Manage VDC budgets, resource planning and workload allocation across projects; support proposals and project planning with VDC scope and cost estimates.
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture or related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in MEP BIM/VDC with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership or director-level capacity.
- Deep expertise in mechanical and plumbing systems, including sizing, routing and constructability considerations for HVAC, hydronic, plumbing and fire protection systems.
- Advanced proficiency in Revit MEP including families, templates, system creation, content management and model optimization.
- Hands-on experience with coordination tools and workflows such as Navisworks, BIM 360 or Autodesk Construction Cloud; familiarity with clash detection and resolution processes.
- Experience with automation tools (Dynamo, Python, Revit APIs) and fabrication software (Trimble/Autodesk Fabrication, MagiCAD) is strongly preferred.
- Proven track record implementing VDC/BIM standards, QA/QC processes, BIM execution plans and delivering measurable project improvements.
