Electrical Engineer - Substation

About the JobThis role is responsible for delivering substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the U.S. and internationally. The work includes developing protection and control systems as well as physical layout design deliverables. Projects vary widely in scope from small distribution upgrades to large-scale transmission facilities providing opportunities to contribute directly to the reliability, resilience, and performance of the electric grid.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and execute the design of high-voltage (13kV-500kV) substations.
- Develop proposals, define project scopes, and prepare conceptual designs and execution plans.
- Estimate engineering costs, labor hours, and project schedules.
- Produce physical design documents including yard layouts, sections, grounding and lightning protection plans, control building arrangements, raceway systems, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and bills of material.
- Create protection and control design drawings such as single-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, DC elementaries, and wiring diagrams.
- Prepare calculations and reports for studies including grounding, lightning protection, and AC/DC load analysis.
- Develop equipment specifications for procurement and participate in factory acceptance testing as needed.
- Coordinate design activities with civil/structural, transmission line, network, and other engineering teams.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.
- Maintain regular communication with clients and external stakeholders.
- Conduct quality reviews of engineering and design deliverables.
- Offer short-term field support during construction phases.
- Support business development, proposal preparation, and marketing efforts.
- Participate in relay settings, 3D/intelligent design initiatives, and professional or technical committees as appropriate.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program and at least 3 years of electrical engineering experience (consulting experience preferred).
- Alternatively, a Bachelors in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the FE exam, and at least 3 years of relevant experience.
- A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering with 2 years of relevant experience may also qualify.
- Strong grasp of standard engineering techniques, practices, and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to approach complex problems analytically and think critically.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Micro Station, and both 2D and 3D design software, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
