In this role, you will be a critical member of the Applied Injury Biomechanics (AIB) team in the Anthropometry, Injury Biomechanics and Ergonomics Lab (AIBEL) in the Biomedical Research and Environmental Sciences Division at NASA Johnson Space Center. Our work focuses on understanding human response to dynamic loads, reducing injury risks during spacecraft landings and spacesuit operations, and shaping design requirements that enable safer hardware for astronauts.

Specifically, this position is related to modeling of bone as it related to impact loads.

AIBEL works with vehicle, habitat and suit designers across multiple NASA Programs, including the EVA and Human Surface Mobility Program, Commercial Crew Program, International Space Station, Gateway, Human Landing System and Orion. Your work will be cross-disciplinary, interfacing with scientists, engineers, hardware designers and physiologists across the NASA and vendor communities, including peers at other NASA centers.

You Will
  • Acquire and/or maintain knowledge of applied injury biomechanics related vehicle requirements, success criteria, and verification methods
  • Assist in the development of requirements and verification methods for lunar vehicles
  • Assist with finite element model simulations to evaluate the loads and dynamics imparted on the crew member by lunar vehicles
  • Assist with reduction and analysis of test data, including appropriate statistical methods
  • Demonstrate a positive problem-solving attitude with an enthusiasm for working as part of an exceptional team
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to the customer and team
  • Serve as a test subject for protocol and hardware evaluations on a volunteer basis
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company.
What You Bring

You bring experience with bone finite element modeling and mechanical properties. You use your experience and judgment to assess fracture risk under complex dynamic loading scenarios. You comply with K ’s Safety, Health and Environmental Plan, Quality Plan, and all safety policies and procedures, and complete all assigned training.

Your Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor of science in human factors/ergonomics, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
  • Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident
Desired
  • Experience with NASA standards and requirements or similar experience with a broad set of biomechanics, human factors, ergonomics, and anthropometry requirements
  • Experience conducting or supporting human health and performance research
Your Skills Required
  • Experience related to bone modeling and bone material property assessment
  • Experience with finite element analysis
  • Ability to work as an individual as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated programming skills (Python/Matlab)
Desired
  • Experience with motion capture systems and analysis of kinematic data
