Job Description

The Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and delivering timely, GAAP-compliant financial reporting. This role performs advanced accounting analysis, supports budgeting and forecasting activities, leads audit preparation, and provides financial insights to leadership. The position also mentors junior staff and collaborates cross‑functionally to support strategic initiatives and process improvements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and oversee the accuracy of the general ledger and financial records.
  • Prepare and review complex journal entries, including accruals, allocations, and inter‑company transactions.
  • Develop and maintain customized schedules to monitor key general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Perform advanced variance and trend analysis to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Generate and present financial reports to leadership and assist in preparing quarterly financial packages for the Board and external stakeholders.
  • Support annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Review assigned cost centers monthly and analyze budget-to-actual variances.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide recommendations for cost control and optimization.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and external regulations.
  • Review financial aspects of third‑party contracts and collaborate with legal and external partners as needed.
  • Lead preparation of audit schedules and serve as a liaison with internal and external auditors.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and participate in system implementations or upgrades.
  • Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to junior accounting staff.
  • Review and approve work performed by lower‑level accountants.
  • Partner with cross‑functional teams on special projects and operational reviews.
Required Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (IT coursework preferred).
  • Master’s degree preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
  • Experience in public transportation or governmental accounting preferred.
Certifications
  • CPA, CMA, or CFE preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems such as SAP, Oracle, or Quick Books.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookup, macros).
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with excellent attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present financial information to leadership.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Experience with SOX and/or IFRS preferred.
  • Familiarity with financial modeling and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) preferred.
