Overview

Position:
Phlebotomist and Patient Service Representative in the Siteman Cancer Center Lab. Requires expertise in blood drawing procedures in an outpatient laboratory environment. Serves as a liaison between all stakeholders and advocates for the patients’ needs.

Working Hours

40 hours per week.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy by identifying the patient, gathering necessary supplies, verifying orders/tube labels, describing steps of the procedure to the patient, cleansing the venipuncture site, using personal protective equipment, and obtaining blood samples in a manner that minimizes patient discomfort.
  • Verifies written and electronic lab orders and releases orders for specimen collection. Prints tube labels and routes orders and labels to the phlebotomist performing sample collection. Consults with the physician team, supervisor, or testing lab for clarification and verification of order appropriateness. Offers suggestions for alternate testing as needed.
  • Greets patients, checks them into scheduling/patient tracking systems, creates appointments for walk-ins, and registers patients in the Barnes system as needed.
  • Monitors insurance requirements and notifies the insurance verification department of tests requiring precertification no later than the date of service. Ensures collected samples are routed to alternate laboratories as required by insurance.
  • Assists physician teams and research coordinators with research-related laboratory order forms. Ensures research orders are linked to the correct research billing code in the Barnes registration system.
  • Prepares and maintains sample collection stations and front desk area; monitors and stocks medical and office supplies. Advises Supervisor/Lead immediately about equipment malfunctions or supply shortages. Maintains cleanliness and order to ensure efficient operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
  • Direct patient setting with exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
  • Requires protective devices as appropriate.
Physical Requirements
  • Typically sitting at a desk or table; typically standing or walking; typical bending, crouching, or stooping; occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.

  • Office equipment; clinical/diagnostic equipment.

Education and Certifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent, or combination of education and/or experience.
  • Certifications/Professional Licenses:
    Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Completion of an educational program in Phlebotomy or Medical Assistance.
  • Work Experience:

    Laboratory or Medical Office Setting (2 years).
  • Skills:
