The Toponymist Analyst supports the accuracy, integrity, and standardization of geographic names data within national databases. You will research, validate, and maintain toponymic information that underpins foundational geospatial products used for intelligence analysis, operational planning, and decision-making worldwide.
This role is ideal for professionals with experience in foreign language analysis, GIS production, and geographic research who thrive in classified, high-impact environments.
Key Responsibilities- Geospatial & Toponymic Analysis
- Analyze, validate, and conflate geographic feature data within the Geographic Names Database (GNDB) and related repositories
- Apply Board on Geographic Names (BGN) standards, Romanization systems, and agency policies
- Use the Geographic Names Processing System (GNPS), imagery, charts, and geospatial tools
- Respond to data requests and corrections through the Ad Hoc process
- Prepare, update, and maintain GNDB entries in compliance with NGA and IC guidelines
- Batch-process completed work and perform quality assurance checks
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness of geographic names data
- Research hydrographic, topographic, and textual sources to support geographic accuracy
- Order, scan, geo-reference, and analyze maps and imagery
- Verify spelling, metadata, and proper feature attribution using native and secondary sources
- Conduct geospatial analysis using ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, and GEOINT tools
- Create shape files, geodatabases, and integrated GIS data products
- Fuse native, historic, and secondary source materials
- Recommend new data sources to improve coverage and production quality
- Collaborate with geographic names experts, IC partners, and government stakeholders
- Clearly communicate analytical findings verbally and in writing
- Operate effectively as both an independent analyst and a team contributor in a fast-paced mission environment
Candidates must meet one of the following experience/education pathways (minimum 5 total points
):
- Fluent in spoken and written French
- High School Diploma + 5+ years relevant experience
- Bachelor's Degree + 4-8 years experience
- Master's Degree + 2-4 years experience
(Additional experience may substitute for degree requirements)
- ILR 2+ or higher French reading proficiency
- Intermediate proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and QGIS
- Knowledge of Geographic Names collection methodologies
- Demonstrated GEOINT research experience
- Experience working with native, historic, and secondary maps and imagery
- Ability to produce shape files, geodatabases, and GIS data products
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to meet deadlines in a classified, mission-driven environment
- Python scripting or automation experience
- Regional Subject Matter Expertise (SME) in assigned Area of Responsibility (AOR)
